Issue of ‘one election’ is absurd, Prof. Dey writes to the High Level Committee

way2barak, Jan 12: Professor Dilip Kumar Dey, Retired Principal of Teachers Trainning College, Silchar and General Secretary, Proactive Senior Citizens’ Forum, Silchar has vehemently opposed the proposal of ‘ One Nation, One Election’. He writes to the the Secretary, High Level Committee-One Nation,One Election, Delhi that the issue of ‘one election’ is absurd in the background of Indian or Bharatiya democracy. We are not Chinese, Russian American, German or Turkish, we don’t deserve a system of election that will crush our social and cultural diversity and lead us to Unitarian or Dictatorial Centralism.

Prof Dey opines on the national issue that India or Bharat is an union of states with strong centre. We have unity in diversity, diversity in language, culture, religion, food habit, dress, ethnicity, geographic locations and choices etc. Our Constitution was framed with all these considerations in view. We feel proud of our national as well as local heritage , our colourful ethos. We have three tire government- local, state and centre. We respect our democracy that recognises dignity and power of all these three. Our states have their governments, they have their law making assemblies within our constitutional framework, have issues of majority and minority in the houses, rise and fall of governments. So also in local/ regional bodies like  District Council, Panchayet, Autonomous Council etc. Lives  and tenures of elected representatives are not guaranteed, they need replacement.
According to him, Our faith in democracy has enjoyed some sort of stability. The operative system needs rectification to make it more pro-people.
Prof. Dilip Kumar Dey sent e-mail to the High Level Committee that we lose working days in elections at different levels – centre, state and local. But the loss of time, money and energy in holding elections in a vast, populous  country  should not be replaced by holding one election considering our needs. Rather attention should be given in waiving the practices of ‘selling and buying’ of representatives, which is a curse on our democracy, once an election is held. Before the tenure is over a representative should not change his party without resignation and paying compensation with fine to the exchequer of the government, he demands.
According to Prof. Dey, attention should be paid to broadening of democracy, invitation people’s free opinion, stoppage of favouritism, political vendetta, corruption, hatred, wastage of money by ministers in unproductive and useless travels, and securing of protection of human lives. Utilisation of working abilities of youths for economic growth is a vexing issue. Instead of one election we suggest meaningful employment of youths in productive work and rule of law.
