JNU turns red again — Left alliance wins all 4 key seats

New Delhi, November 6 : Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University turns red again — the Left alliance sweeps all four key posts. ABVP once again draws a blank.

In the JNU Students’ Union elections, Left alliance candidate Aditi Mishra defeated ABVP’s Vikas Patel by a margin of over 400 votes for the post of President. For the post of Vice President, K. Gopika of the Left alliance defeated the ABVP candidate by more than 1,200 votes. For the post of General Secretary, Sunil Yadav of the Left alliance won against ABVP’s Rajeshwar Kant Dubey by over 100 votes — a closely fought contest. The Left candidate received 1,915 votes, while the ABVP candidate got 1,841 votes. For the post of Joint Secretary, Danish Ali of the Left alliance emerged victorious.

The JNU Students’ Union election was held on Tuesday. Vote counting began at 9 p.m. under tight security. According to the JNU Election Committee, 67% of students cast their votes. For the four central panel posts, there were 20 candidates in total, with 9,043 eligible voters.

Traditionally, JNU has been known as a Left-leaning campus — a cradle for leftist and ultra-left student politics in India. Interestingly, in the previous election, after a long gap, ABVP had won one of the four central panel posts. This time, however, the Left reclaimed that seat, marking a complete sweep and creating history once again.
