Jinnah Tower in Andhra Pradesh gets painted in tricolour after protest by Hindu Vahini on 26 Jan

Feb. 2: A YSR Congress MLA in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, painted the Jinnah Tower in tricolor on Tuesday. The name of the tower has been a center of conflict for some time, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding that it be replaced.

This new development on the issue took place after three people claiming to be members of the Hindu Vahini organization were arrested on January 26 for allegedly attempting to hoist the national flag at the tower defying prohibitory orders. On Tuesday, the YSRC MLA said that a pole will also be constructed at the tower. He added, “Necessary arrangements will be made to hoist the National flag at Jinnah Tower on Thursday.”

Guntur East MLA Mohammed Musthafa, who is from chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party (YSCRP) said, “Muslims fought against the British rule during the freedom struggle. After achieving independence, some Muslims settled in Pakistan. But, we wanted to continue in India and we love our motherland.

Jinnah Tower is a landmark monument in the city of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. It is named after the father of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah and is located on Mahatma Gandhi Road of the city. The tower was erected on six pillars which open to a dome, typical of the then Muslim architecture in early twentieth century. The tower, built in honour of Jinnah in the pre-Independence era, stands tall on six pillars and opens to a dome. The Jinnah Tower is one of the few structures of Islamic architecture in the region. According to historians, the tower was built by a local Muslim leader Lal Jan Basha after the visit of Jinnah’s representative Liaquat Ali Khan to Guntur.
