Man who killed a blogger in Bangladesh nabbed in Bangalore with voter card made from Silchar

Cachar police investigating into this incident!

July 7: In a unprecedented incident, a blogger, Ananta Bijoy Das was ruthlessly murdered with machetes in  Sylhet district of Bangladesh in 2015. Das wrote blogs for Mukto-Mona, a website once moderated by Avijit Roy, himself hacked to death in February 2015. The brother of the deceased,  Ratneswar Dash filed a murder case with the Jalalabad police station against four persons.

On March 2022, a Sylhet court in Bangladesh sentenced four people to death for murdering blogger Ananta. Of the convicts, Abul Khayer, has been in jail since the filing of the case in 2015, while two others – Harun Ur Rashid and Abul Hossain, remain absconding.

The fourth accused awarded death sentence, identified as Faisal fled away from Sylhet in Bangladesh to Bangalore in India. An official of the Interpol National Central Bureau (NCB) Dhaka office Wednesday (6 July) informed that a special team of Kolkata police arrested Faisal Ahmed from Bommanahalli in Bangalore on 1 July.

Sources in the Kolkata police revealed that Bangladeshi detectives found Faisal’s whereabouts in India in early June. His mobile number was given to the Kolkata police, who traced the number and found Faisal in Bangalore and ultimately nabbed him. Faisal was brought to Kolkata on 3 July.

What came in most surprising in this incident that the accused Faisal has got links with Silchar at Cachar district in Assam. As per Kolkata police, Faisal crossed the border illegally and took shelter at Silchar in Assam. He was using a fake passport under the name Shahid Majumdar with address of Mizoram, which is close to Cachar. Faisal also obtained a driving license from Bangalore and Voter card from Silchar. The Kolkata police is expected to hand over Faisal to Bangladesh police soon.

Meanwhile, sources in Cachar Police acknowledged the fact that such an information has reached them. The source further specified that the Cachar Police is investigating into the incident as to how the accused Faisal managed to get voter card from Silchar. However, the source stated that only after the investigation is over, Cachar Police can officially come up with its statement.
