Silchar’s streets breathe as Civic crackdown clears Sadarghat road
July 22, 2025

way2barak, July 22:–In a rare and refreshing spectacle, Silchar’s bustling Court Square to Sadarghat stretch stood wide open and orderly on Monday, a scene the city’s residents have not witnessed in years. The combined efforts of the Cachar District Administration and Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) brought a long-awaited breather to the city, as an uncompromising eviction drive cleared pavements and roads of encroachment, restoring free movement for pedestrians and vehicles alike.
From the break of dawn, footpaths and thoroughfares from beneath the new Barak Bridge through Court Square, past the Municipal Corporation office, up to the Shani Temple were strikingly free of vendors and makeshift stalls. Both flanks of the Government Higher Secondary School road and adjoining lanes also wore a clean and organized look, signaling a strong administrative resolve.
The operation, meticulously planned and executed, saw traders voluntarily vacating the pavements after being served notices over the weekend. The SMC, under the leadership of its newly appointed Commissioner Smt. Srishti Singh had earlier issued strict directives to enforce civic guidelines without compromise, warning of stringent action against violations.
For the city’s residents long accustomed to bottlenecks, haphazard vending, and clogged streets the transformation was nothing short of remarkable. Throughout the day, drivers, shoppers, and pedestrians moved with an ease that many said was unseen in at least a decade. The crackdown also sent a clear message to habitual offenders in other congested areas such as Shillongpatti, Central Road, Janiganj, Club Road, and Nazirpatti.
Speaking on the occasion, Cachar District Commissioner Mridul Yadav hailed the initiative as “a significant step towards reclaiming the city for its citizens.” He added, “This drive shows that with resolve and cooperation between departments, restoring civic order is not just possible but inevitable. We are committed to sustaining these efforts in the days to come.”
Echoing this sentiment, SMC Commissioner Smt. Srishti Singh said, “Our intent is not just enforcement but to instill a sense of shared responsibility among citizens. The support from the public has been encouraging, and we appeal to everyone to maintain this spirit of cooperation so that Silchar can truly transform into a model urban center.”
Residents and civic bodies alike expressed appreciation, hoping that Monday’s breakthrough signals the beginning of sustained and coordinated action.
As Silchar wakes up to the possibility of a more organized tomorrow, Monday’s success stands as undeniable proof that when civic authorities lead with firmness and vision, change is not just a promise it is a reality.
This is stated in a press release issued from Regional office of Information Public Relations Barak valley Zone Silchar Assam.
