India’s Satya S Tripathi appointed as UN Secretary General

Satya S. Tripathi, a development and environment expert from India has been appointed an Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Organisation (UNO). He will also head the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) New York office. Tripathi, who will succeed Elliott Harris of Trinidad and Tobago, has since 2017 served as Senior Adviser on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at UNEP.

The appointment made Monday by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was announced by his Spokesperson Stephane Guterres. Tripathi is now the third Indian at the senior levels of the UN hierarchy. He has served the UN for 20 years in Europe, Asia and Africa on strategic assignments in sustainable development, human rights, democratic governance and legal affairs.

Earlier in his career he served as a Senior Distinguished Fellow on Natural Resources Governance with the World Agroforestry Centre; and on the World Economic Forum’s Global Advisory Council on Forests. Mr. Tripathi holds Honours Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Commerce; and Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Law from Berhampur University, India.
