1st COVID-19 patient of Assam discharged from SMCH, another from MMCH, active cases 9

May 6: The first coronavirus positive patient from Karimganj district in Assam, who was undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) was finally discharged on Wednesday after three consecutive negative tests. On Wednesday, another COVID-19 patient from Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH), Guwahati was also discharged after 3 consecutive negative tests. With this, the total number of active cases in Assam has come down to nine.

There were a total of 44 coronavirus patients in Assam, out of which 34 were cured and discharged and 1 person died. The last patient detected with COVID-19 in the state was from Kokhrajhar on 5 May. Taking to his twitter handle, State Health Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Glad to share that two more #COVID19 patients, Jalaluddin (1st patient) & Motiur Tarapdar, have been discharged from SMCH & MMCH respectively, after three consecutive negative tests. Now the number of active cases in Assam is 9, with total 44 positive cases so far.”

Jamal Uddin (52), who had attended a religious congregation at Nizam Uddin, New Delhi, was admitted at SMCH on March 29. According to sources, medical tests revealed that besides being infected by corona virus, Jamal uddin also has other ailments like diabetes and cancer. On March 31, his treatment started after it was confirmed that he was infected by COVID-19. His health started deteriorating after April 11. Eventually, Health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma discussed his health condition with cancer specialists in Guwahati following which nine tests were done and all the tests showed him positive for COVID-19. On May 4 and May 5, tests were done again. This time, the results came out to be negative. On Wednesday, he was discharged after 36 days (after his full recovery). He will be in quarantine under the Karimganj health department’s supervision for the next 14 days, sources said.

Minister of Excise, Forest & Fishery Department Parimal Suklabaidya, who was present on the occasion, said that Jamal Uddin, who was infected by corona virus after he visited Nizam Uddin and subsequently treated at SMCH, should share his  experience with the residents of his locality and make them aware them about the importance of social distancing and washing hands.

Further, the minister appealed to the masses to seriously follow all the advisories of the government and help it combat the “deadly” virus, which has claimed numerous lives across the globe. Principal of Silchar medical college and hospital Dr Babul Bezbaruah and Superintendent of SMCH Dr Abhijit Swami also spoke during the occasion.
