District Magistrate cracks down to prevent election malpractices in Dholai

way2barak, November 11: Ahead of the crucial bye-election for the 11-Dholai (SC) Legislative Assembly constituency in Cachar District, District Magistrate Mridul Yadav has ordered a strict crackdown on potential election-related misconduct, including bribery, violence, and unlawful influence tactics. The bye-election, set for November 13, 2024, has prompted the district administration to take decisive steps to ensure a fair and peaceful voting process.

In a statement issued Monday, Mr. Yadav expressed concerns over past election irregularities in the region, where incidents of violence, cash distribution, and gifts such as clothing, blankets, alcohol, and food were reportedly used to sway voters. These actions have previously led to clashes and disturbed the peace, raising fears that similar tactics might reemerge before this critical election.

The newly issued order, effective from November 11 through Election Day on November 13, strictly prohibits the transport or distribution of goods intended to influence voters. All transport within Cachar District will be closely monitored, with restrictions on items such as clothing, blankets, alcohol, food, and cash. Additionally, entry into tea estates within the district will be restricted between 5:00 PM and 7:00 AM on designated days, with access limited to authorized personnel and immediate family members. Unauthorized entries will require prior approval from estate authorities, who must notify local police.

The District Magistrate has invoked Section 163 B.N.S.S, granting officials the authority to take immediate action to prevent any disruptions. Emphasizing the importance of public peace and the integrity of the election process, the order underscores the district administration’s firm commitment to ensuring a transparent and orderly electoral environment for the Dholai constituency.

This is stated in a press release issued from the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, Silchar, Assam.
