Cryocan, artificial insemination materials distributed to increase milk production in Hailakandi

July 1: The District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department distributed cryocan and artificial insemination materials to the maitris of Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) at a function here on Wednesday. District Veterinary Officer, RA Laskar disclosed that 11 numbers of cryocan were distributed among the maitris with the aim to increase milk production and doubling farmers’ income.

“Our focus is to upgrade Sawihal straw used with the local cattle to increase milk production up to the extent of 10 litre per cattle per day. Holstein Freisian and Jersey are now being used for the same purpose,” said Laskar. To conserve and develop indigenous bovine breeds, government has launched the ‘Rashtriya Gokul Mission’ under the National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development (NPBBD). Laskar said that the NPBBD was launched with an integrated, holistic and scientific approach to improve and upgrade the genetic makeup of bovines.

“To conserve and develop indigenous bovine breeds and to increase their productivity, the government has provided an added thrust to indigenous bovine breeds by way of Rashtriya Gokul Mission initiative,” he said.
Other objectives include enhancing production and productivity, including developing and conserving indigenous breeds of milch cattle and development of dairy infrastructure for improved procurement, processing and marketing.

The annual growth of milk production is estimated to rise to 9 per cent by 2022. Veterinary Officer, Dr.JK Talukdar and Principal, School of Veterinary Science, Dr.JCK Singha were present during the distribution programme.
