Barak Valley registers 618 Covid +ve cases on Monday; 1 death at SMCH

Active cases 2,043 in Barak Valley

May 10: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in the three districts of Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Monday, the number of fresh cases in the valley increased once again. A total of 618 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley during the day. It needs mention here that on Sunday, Barak Valley registered 343 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Monday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 369 positive cases   (It was 197 on Sunday)
  • Karimganj: 153 positive cases (It was 92 on Sunday)
  • Hailakandi: 96 positive cases (It was 54 on Sunday)

A total of 369 new cases of COVID-19 was reported on Sunday in Cachar. This is the highest single day spike of Covid cases in the district. As per the updated data, a total of 3,442 Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) were done, out of which, a total of 215 persons were found positive in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), whereas 154 more were detected positive in RT-PCR Test. This was informed by Dr. Ibrahim Ali Ahmed, District Surveillance Officer (DSO), IDSP, Cachar on Monday night. With this, the total number of Covid cases in 2021 reached 2,850 in 2021, whereas during the year, 1,874 patients were discharged. At present, there are 953 active cases in the district.

Further, the death of Covid positive patients continues at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). Retired Additional Commissioner (ADC) Mriganko Mohan Das (82) was admitted at SMCH on 8 May. He was tested coronavirus positive. He, however, breathed his last at 10.50 PM on 9 May. This was informed by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH on Monday evening.

As per sources, the wife of the deceased Mriganko Mohan Das was also learnt to be Covid positive and was undergoing treatment at SMCH. Their son, Mridul Mohan Das, Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany, GC College, Silchar has also been tested positive, but is in home isolation.

Hailakandi registered 96 new COVID-19 cases on Monday. Of the 96 positive cases detected on Monday, 90 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and 06 found positive in RT-PCR test. The district has altogether 406 active COVID-19 cases. During the day, 1,373 RAT tests and 58 RT-PCR tests were done. 46 patients were discharged during the day. It needs mention here that 54 persons were found positive in Hailakandi on Sunday.

Karimganj registered highest spike of 153 fresh COVID-19 cases on Monday, pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 5,314. Of the 153 active cases detected on Monday, 139 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and 14 under RT-PCR. It needs mention here that on Sunday, 92 persons were detected as Covid-19 positive.

Seven persons have succumbed to COVID-19 in the second wave of the pandemic. The district has altogether 684 active COVID-19 cases while 26 patients have been discharged from hospital and home isolation on Monday. 1,379 swab samples were collected on Monday. Altogether 2,40,763 samples have been tested so far.
The district has currently eight active containment zones.

On Monday, out of 72,197 tests, 5,803 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. This is the highest single day spike in the number of Covid cases in Assam in 2021. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 2,98,171. The positivity rate in the state is 8.04 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 1,481 positive cases during the day. Further, on Monday, 77 more persons lost their lives in the state due to COVID-19. This is the highest single day death toll in Assam due to coronavirus. On Monday, 4,231 patients were discharged in Assam. With this, a total of 2,57,571 patients got cured and were subsequently discharged

Further, during the day, 77 patients died in Assam due to COVID-19. Out of the 77 deceased, 40 are from Kamrup Metro; 10 each from Kamrup Rural & Dibrugarh; 4 from Bongaigaon; 3 each from Golaghat, Nagaon, Nalbari & Sivasagar; 2 each from Hojai, Tinsukia & Udalguri; 1 each from Darrang, Dhubri, Jorhat, Sonitpur & Karimganj. The death tally of the state now stands at 1,753.
