Silchar Municipality takes a firm stand against footpath encroachments

way2barak February 3: In a bold move to reclaim public spaces and ensure pedestrian safety, the Silchar Municipality has launched a stringent crackdown on illegal footpath encroachments across the town. With growing concerns over blocked walkways in high-traffic areas like Central Road, Nazirpatty, Rangirkhari Point, Hospital Road, and Sonai Road, the municipal has taken decisive action to restore accessibility for pedestrians.

The encroachments, caused primarily by shopkeepers extending their businesses onto the footpaths, have been creating significant safety hazards, especially for children and senior citizens. With the walkways obstructed, pedestrians are often forced to walk on busy roads, increasing the risk of accidents. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Municipality has begun making announcements throughout the town, reminding residents and business owners of the importance of keeping footpaths clear.

To curb this menace, shopkeepers have been specifically urged to abide by the regulations and refrain from encroaching on public pathways. Those found repeatedly violating the rules will face strict penalties, including fines, while unauthorized structures on footpaths will be removed to ensure a seamless pedestrian experience. The authorities have stressed that maintaining clear walkways is not only a matter of civic discipline but also a fundamental right for pedestrians who deserve unobstructed access to public spaces.

As part of this initiative, the Municipality has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Silchar into a pedestrian-friendly town. Officials have emphasized that achieving this goal requires collective responsibility, urging both business owners and the general public to cooperate in making the town’s streets safer and more accessible. By enforcing these measures, the Silchar Municipality aims to strike a balance between commercial activity and public convenience, ensuring that the city’s infrastructure serves everyone fairly.

This is stated in a press release issued from Regional office of Information & Public Relations Barak valley Zone Silchar Assam.
