Cachar celebrates Teachers’ Day with grandeur

way2barak, Sept 5:– –The spirit of reverence and gratitude towards teachers echoed through Gandhi Bhawan here on Friday as Cachar observed the 64th Teachers’ Day in a befitting manner. The programme, organised by the District Administration, Cachar, and the Inspector of Schools under the aegis of the District Teachers’ Day Celebration Committee, paid rich tributes to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the eminent philosopher, teacher, and former President of India, whose birth anniversary marks the occasion.
The day’s highlight was the keynote address delivered by Guru Charan University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Niranjan Roy, who graced the event as Chief Guest. In his elaborate speech, Prof. Roy reflected on the life and legacy of Dr. Radhakrishnan, calling him “a beacon of wisdom and a philosopher whose thoughts continue to illuminate the path of Indian education.” He reminded the gathering that Dr. Radhakrishnan symbolised the noblest ideals of the teaching profession,humility, scholarship, and the ability to inspire generations.
Prof. Roy further dwelt on this year’s theme of Teachers’ Day, “Inspiring the Next Generation of Learners”, and said it was a timely reminder of the responsibilities resting on teachers in an era of rapid change. He emphasised that education today must go beyond the boundaries of textbooks. “Teachers are not merely transmitters of knowledge; they are torchbearers who light the flame of curiosity, innovation, and moral strength in young minds,” he said.
He urged teachers to focus on nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and compassion, which he termed as the “three pillars of modern education.” Stressing that children must be guided to excel not only in studies but also in extracurricular pursuits like singing, sports, art, and cultural activities, Prof. Roy noted, “It is these experiences that shape a student into a well-rounded individual and eventually, into an ideal citizen of society.”
In a thought-provoking remark, he said, “Inspiring the next generation does not mean only preparing them for jobs. It means preparing them for life to face challenges with courage, to respect diversity, to uphold values, and to carry forward the ideals of a just and compassionate society.” Prof. Roy also urged teachers to embrace technology as an ally in learning, while ensuring that the human touch and ethical guidance remain at the heart of teaching.
Silchar MLA, Shri Dipayan Chakraborty, who attended as Guest of Honour, paid heartfelt tributes to teachers as the true nation-builders. He emphasised the importance of nurturing young minds with a strong moral compass while adapting to the demands of a rapidly evolving society. “The foundation of any progressive nation rests on the shoulders of dedicated teachers,” he said, calling upon the youth to draw inspiration from their mentors.
Additional District Commissioner (Education), Antara Sen, ACS in her address, stressed on the need for holistic education that strikes a balance between academics and character-building. She urged teachers to act as role models in guiding students towards responsible citizenship and lifelong learning. Cachar College Principal, Dr. Apratim Nag, also shared his reflections on the transformative role of teachers.
Earlier, Inspector of Schools, Cachar, Ganesh Harijan,AES, welcomed the dignitaries and participants with an address that recalled the enduring legacy of educators who dedicate their lives to nation-building through selfless service.
Adding to the significance of the day, the Hon’ble Governor of Assam launched a unique initiative, the “Governor Assam Varishtha Shikshak Samman 2025”, aimed at recognising the senior-most surviving retired primary school teachers across the state. In Cachar, District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, IAS, along with Inspector of Schools Ganesh Harijan,AES, visited the residence of 3 , district’s eldest LP teachers and felicitated the veteran educator with a traditional gamocha, a citation, a basket of fruits, and sweets. Similar felicitation ceremonies were also held at the LAC and block level,where 34 retired teachers were felicitated with gamocha and baskets of fruits reflecting a deep respect for lifelong dedication to foundational education.
At the central event in Silchar, 25 distinguished teachers from across the district were honoured for their contribution to education. The felicitation ceremony, marked by warmth and gratitude, celebrated the tireless service of teachers who continue to inspire generations.
The day-long celebration, attended by a large gathering of students, teachers, and dignitaries, reaffirmed the vital role of teachers in shaping society and stood as a testimony to Cachar’s commitment to education and its torchbearers.
