Colleges in Assam to implement Uniform Fee Structure from this year

June 10: The Directorate of Higher Education (DHE), Government of Assam has come up with a uniform fee structure to be implemented in all provincialised colleges of Assam for students seeking admission in Higher Secondary (HS) and Degree Course for the year 2019-20. This is for the first time that the state government has taken up such a decision. However, the admission fee will be free for those students whose parents’ income is less than Rs 2 lakh a year.

In this regard, an order addressed to all Principals of Provincialised Colleges of Assam was served by A.Saikia Baruah, DHE, Assam on 4 June, 2019. All the provincialised colleges were directed by the DHE to implement uniform fee structure from this academic session, that is, 2019-20.

The fees structure has been made in three parts: Metro, Urban and Rural. Again, concessional rates were devised for female students for admission in HS courses. For admission in Higher Secondary Course in Arts & Commerce stream, thes in Metro, the fees is Rs.4320, Rs.3920 in Urban and Rs.3420. On the other hand, for admission in Science stream, boys will have to pay Rs.5390 in Metro, Rs.4990 in Urban and Rs.4490 in Rural areas. For girls, the fees will be Rs.4670 in Metro, Rs.4270 in Urban and Rs.3770 in Rural colleges.

For admission in Degree Course (Pass) in Arts & Commerce streams, both boys and girls shall have to pay Rs.5620 in Urban, Rs.5320 in Urban and Rs.4720 in Rural areas. Whereas, for Degree Course (Honours) Arts/Commerce, students as per uniform fee structure will have to pay Rs.5840 in Urban, Rs.5540 in Urban and Rs.4940 in Rural areas. Now, for admission in Science stream (Pass), boys & girls need to pay Rs.6040 in Urban, Rs.5740 in Urban and Rs.5140 in Rural areas. Students seeking admission in Science (Honours) will have to pay Rs.6820 in Urban, Rs.6520 in Urban and Rs.5920 in Rural areas.

However, the DHE has also given the Principals of the provincialised colleges some discretion in the following matters:

  • The amount as stated in uniform fee structure are the ceiling of maximum fees, however, colleges can adopt lower fee structure.
  • The head of fees could be changed by individual colleges within the ceiling.
  • This structure needs to be reconsidered for modification after three years.
  • Tax/levies of local bodies, e.g., GMC/GDMA/MC etc. may be added by the colleges in the fee structure.
