Barak–Brahmaputra Literary Bonds Strengthened through Assam Sahitya Sabha’s Cultural Exchange in Silchar

way2barak, October 12: –The concluding day of the third full session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha’s 2025–27 Executive Committee witnessed a spirited celebration of Assam’s literary and cultural unity, as a special cultural evening titled “Cultural Exchange Program between Barak and Brahmaputra” illuminated Banga Bhawan, Silchar, on Sunday.
The two-day session, held on October 11 and 12, brought together eminent literary figures, scholars, and cultural activists from across Assam in an atmosphere of dialogue, inclusivity, and creative exchange. The program, hosted with grandeur and community participation, showcased the essence of Assam’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
Addressing the gathering, Silchar MLA Shri Dipayan Chakraborty extended warm gratitude to the delegation of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, led by its President Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami, for organizing such a magnificent two-day convention in Silchar. He commended the Sabha for its inclusive approach and sincere efforts to strengthen the cultural bond between the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys.
In his elaborate address, MLA Chakraborty recalled the historic gesture of the Asam Sahitya Sabha delegation led by Dr. Goswami, who had attended the Bhasha Shahid Divas on May 19 this year in Silchar to pay tribute to the language martyrs who laid down their lives for the recognition of Bengali as one of the official languages in the Barak Valley. The MLA expressed heartfelt appreciation for the Sabha’s support for naming the Silchar Railway Station as “Bhasha Shahid Station” in honour of those martyrs.
He further urged the Central Committee of the Assam Sahitya Sabha to consider organizing a grand Asam Sahitya Sabha Adhiveshan in Silchar in the coming years, similar in scale to the one earlier held in Hailakandi district. MLA Dipayan Chakraborty assured full cooperation and administrative support from his side for such an event, noting that a large-scale Adhiveshan in Silchar would further deepen the emotional and cultural ties between the two valleys.
The highlight of the evening came with the inauguration of the cultural exchange program by Cachar District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, who also delivered an inspiring and elaborate address emphasizing the unifying strength of literature and culture in enriching the state’s social fabric.
In his address, DC Yadav lauded the Assam Sahitya Sabha for its enduring role in uniting diverse linguistic and ethnic communities through the medium of literature. He remarked that the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys, though geographically distant, share a deep emotional bond shaped by Assam’s composite cultural heritage.
“The essence of Assamese culture lies in its inclusivity and its ability to embrace diversity. The exchange between Barak and Brahmaputra is not merely a cultural event; it is a reaffirmation of our shared identity and brotherhood,” he said.
DC Mridul Yadav further highlighted the importance of cultural and literary platforms in promoting peace, harmony, and mutual respect. He encouraged students and young writers to engage more actively in literary movements, taking pride in Assam’s heritage while contributing creatively to its progressive cultural identity. He expressed optimism that such programs would pave the way for even greater cultural cooperation between the two valleys in the years ahead.

Earlier in the morning, adding a vibrant touch to the session were some beautiful moments of the cultural procession, which reflected the diverse artistic beauty of Assam. The colourful parade held during the full Silchar convention showcased the grandeur and inclusivity of the Assam Sahitya Sabha. Minister Shri Krishnendu Pal, President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami, and MP (Rajyasabha) Kanad Purkayastha led the procession, accompanied by members from the Sabha’s Central and Silchar branches, students from the Tribal Sahitya Sabhas, artists’ groups, and schoolchildren. With traditional music, dance, and ethnic attire, the procession symbolized the living spirit of Assam’s cultural mosaic.

The concluding evening featured soulful performances, songs, dances, and recitations that celebrated the harmonious coexistence of multiple cultures across Assam. The artistic exchanges between performers from both valleys beautifully conveyed the Sabha’s enduring message of inclusivity and linguistic unity.
The two-day session stood as a testament to the Assam Sahitya Sabha’s unwavering role in bridging communities through literature, art, and cultural understanding.
