After Municipal wards, Covid vaccination drive to begin from 18 June in rural areas of Cachar

June 17: In view of Covid-19 pandemic and to contain the further spread of the virus, a week-long vaccination drive in Silchar urban area was undertaken in the 1st part of June, 2021. A total of 49,267 persons were vaccinated in Silchar in this special drive. After this successful vaccination drive in urban areas, the Cachar district administration has now taken in hand the proposal of administering vaccine in the urban areas of Cachar district from 18 June, 2021.

Informing this, the district administration stated that a maximum of 250 persons will be vaccinated in each rural centre during this special drive. This drive will be undertaken in 8 BLock PHC’s covering 29 GPs. A vaccination plan for 18 June has already been prepared for this purpose. It was further informed that other Gaon Panchayats will also be covered in subsequent days and schedule will be posted accordingly.

It needs mention here that former Chairman of Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) and Congress leader Tamal Kanti Banik in a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar on 11 May, 2021 raised the demand Covid vaccination ward-wise in Municipal areas and on Gaon Panchayat basis in rural areas of Cachar. The week-long vaccination drive began was conducted in 28 centres of Silchar town from 4 June, 2021 till 10 of June. Following this, Mr Banik again wrote to the Deputy Commissioner on 15 June to accelerate the process of vaccination in GP areas of Silchar Parliamentary constituency. Finally, the Cachar district administration issued orders for beginning rural vaccination from 18 June. Expressing satisfaction, Tamal Kanti Banik said, “I thank the district administration of Cachar for giving due weightage to the legitimate demand which I have raised.”
