Jayati Chakraborty teacher of Women’s College dies of Covid at SMCH

May 6: In a tragic turn of events, Assistant Professor of Bengali of Women’s College, Silchar, Dr Jayati Chakraborty (48) breathed her last on 6 May, 2021. Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) informed that Dr. Jayati Chakraborty was detected as Covid-19 positive after she did Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) at S.M. Dev Civil Hospital, Silchar on 26 April. She was admitted at Silchar Medical College on the same day.

Dr. Bhaskar Gupta informed, “She was admitted following RAT positive with a diabetic history of last 10 years and shortness of breath on 26 April. She was admitted in Covid ICU and was diagnosed as Covid pneumonia with Dm. She was initially put on NIV for many days, after which on 5 May, there was deterioration of oxygen.” Unfortunately, inspite of the best efforts, Dr. Jayati Chakraborty breathed her last at 6.15 PM on 6 May, 2021.

On election duty

She is survived by her husband and a son. Her death was mourned by all of Women’s College and the entire college teaching fraternity. Apart from being a college teacher, Jayati Bhattacharjee was also involved in cultural activities. She used to compare many such programmes at Silchar Doordarshan Kendra. Dr Chakraborty also went for poll duty as a Presiding Officer during the recently concluded Assam Assembly Election, 2021. Cachar Zone of Assam College Teachers’ Association (ACTA) have expressed deep grief at the passing away of Dr. Jayati Bhattacharjee.
