Mamata Banerjee sworn in as Chief Minister of West Bengal

May 5: Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Wednesday. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar administered her the oath of office and secrecy at a low-key ceremony at Raj Bhawan held amid the raging Covid-19 pandemic. Banerjee took the oath in Bengali language. This is the third consecutive time that Ms. Banerjee assumed the office of Chief Minister.

The Trinamool Congress won 213 seats in the 294-member Assembly in the recent election. The party’s vote share was also at an all-time high of 47.9 %. The elected TMC legislators had unanimously elected Ms. Banerjee as leader.

After being sworn-in, Mamata Banerjee said that her first priority after resuming office will be to tackle the Covid-19 situation. “I will appeal to all political parties to maintain peace. Take proper care that there is no violence. West Bengal does not like violence, and I do not support violence,” added Ms. Banerjee.
