Alarming! 2 more deaths of Covid +ve patients at SMCH; total 4 deaths on Friday

April 30: In an alarming development, two more Covid-19 positive patients died on Friday at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) taking the death toll during the day to 04. This was informed by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH on Friday night. The two deceased are:

  • Debashish Deb (65) from Ambicapatty, Silchar was admitted at SMCH on 26 April with fever, cough. He was clinically diagnosed as mild Covid with comorbidity and was managed as per protocol. On 29 April, the patient developed shortness of breath for which he was shifted to OCU and put under oxygen support. Later, at around 10 AM, he developed cardiac arrest and had to be immediately intubated. ECG revealed acute MI (myocardial infarction). He was then thrombolysed, ut ultimately, he breathed his last at 7.30 PM on 30 April, 2021.
  • Jalal Uddin Barbhuiya (80) from Bihara Part-I in Cachar was admitted at SMCH on 28 April. He was diabetic with a history of fever, cough and sob. The patient was diagnosed as a case of severe Covid pneumonia with htn. The patient had to be intubated today at 10.30 AM> as he was desaturating. Ultimately, he died at 7.15 PM on Friday.

Earlier, on 30 April (Friday) itself, two more Covid-19 positive patients died at SMCH. They are:

  • Moni Rani Das (65) from Trunk Road, Police Quarters, Silchar was admitted at SMCH on 24 April after testing Covid positive. She, however, died on 30 April at 8.15 AM.
  • Pappu Nath (26) from Katlicherra in Hailakandi also took admission at SMCH  on 22 April. He breathed his last at 5.15 PM on 30 April.

As per protocol, their death details have been forwarded to the State Death Audit Board in Guwahati for final certification of Covid or non-Covid death. It needs mention here that on 29 April also, two Covid-19 positive patients died at SMCH. They were Amal Das (50) of Ashram Road, Silchar and Sandhya Bhattacharjee (84) of Athal Basti in Cachar.
