Issue of waiting list candidates for admission to Ph.D prog in Law deptt of AUS still unresolved

Nov. 16: The proposed intake of students in Ph.D programme of Department of Law, Assam University for the academic session 2020-21 was 13 as per the online prospectus brought out by the varsity. However, only 5 candidates were selected for this Ph.D programme. The rest 8 of them were placed in the waiting list. In this connection, these candidates also gave a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor of Assam University.

However, Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, Vice Chancellor of the varsity on 7 October, 2020 refuted the allegation as misleading. He said that as a result of not understanding the subtlety of the issue, wrong message is being spread. Infact, there are two categories under which students are admitted in the Ph.D programme of Law Department, one is of law related, while the other is non-law. All these days, Ph.D was available in law related section. This is for the 1st time that Ph.D scholars would be admitted in non-law related section, for which rules are being framed. There are a total of 8 seats in this category. The Vice Chancellor added that as soon as the rules are framed, list for those 8 seats will be declared. Due to Covid situation, there was a slight delay in this regard.

However, since then, a month has elapsed, but the varsity has yet not come up with the second list. Expressing deep concern, the aspiring candidates submitted a 2nd memorandum to the Vice Chancellor on last Monday. In the memorandum, they wrote, “As the second admission list of the Ph.D programme of the Department of Law has not been published yet and we have been waiting for it since the last I month and during this phase we are passing through mental stress, anxiety, frustration, depression. We would therefore earnestly request you to make necessary arrangement for publishing the Second admission list of Ph.D. program of the Department of Law on the basis of existing waiting list candidates as early as possible.”

However, these candidates also mentioned that if they fail to get the desired justice, they would have no other way than to approach “The University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Human Resource Development ( MHRD)/ Hon’ble Union Education Minister, Honb’le President of India, Hon’ble Chancellor Of Assam University, Silchar, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Silchar, Cachar, Honb’le Governor of Assam, State Education Ministry of Assam/ Honb’le State Education Minister of Assam, Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly, Silchar, and finally the Gauhati High Court for immediate intervention.”
