Barpeta SP performing dual duties of a corona warrior–a police officer & a doctor

Sept. 6: Amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, certain incidents have come to surface which definitely speaks about the bright side of the picture. These incidents are evidences of the fact that human beings are still not ripped apart of humanity. However, an incident reported from Barpeta has probably given a loud message that serving humanity in crisis does not always require a duty chart, but it comes from within one’s own sense of responsibility for his/her fellow-human beings.

Robin Kumar, Superintendent of Police (SP) from Barpeta in Assam is a 2014 batch IPS officer. However, before donning the Khadi uniform, he earned himself MBBS, M.D. degree and was a specialist in medicine. Anative of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, Robin Kumar has now joined hands in treating the COVID-19 patients apart from his assigned duties of a police officer.

At present Robin Kumar is successfully running a 50-bedded Covid care centre with four ICUs in Barpeta Police Reserve for police personnel and their families. Performing the dual roles of district police chief and a doctor, IPS Kumar has earned laurels from different quarters including the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Renuka Mishra, ADG in UP Police, Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and many others.

Till now, 76 police personnel in Barpeta were infected by the coronavirus and Kumar personally took care of everyone of them. All of them are now cured. The IPS Association in a tweet wrote, “First Line Of Defence! Dr. Robin Kumar, SP, @Barpeta_Police, set an example by leading from the front. In the nation”s fight against coronavirus, Dr. Kumar, MD (Medicine), personally convened a health camp.”

An MBBS and MD from Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Meerut, Robin Kumar said, ““As a doctor, we are one part of the picture, that is curative. What about the prevention? As a civil servant I am performing both the roles.”
