NIRF Ranking: VC citing students agitation as scapegoat for poor ranking, alleges Students’ Union

June 12: A university where students agitation disrupts academic atmosphere round the year is bound to slip out of the ranking scheme of National Institutes Ranking Framework (NIRF) conducted by MHRD. This was vehemently criticised by the Assam University Students’ Union (AUSU) in a press briefing convened by them at Silchar Press Club. They categorically stated that Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, Vice Chancellor of Assam University is searching for a scapegoat.

Speaking during the press meet, Biswaroop Bhattacharjee President of Assam University Students’ Union (AUSU) said, “When Universities like Jadavavpur, JNU & Jamia Milia Islamia can achieve 5th, 8th and 10th position inspite of massive students agitation, why could Assam University not find a place for itself within 100 position? Jamia, Jadavpur & JNU were involved in political agitation opposing the CAA, but we did agitation for getting basic facilities like water etc. The Vice Chancellor by his press statement on Thursday has tried to hide the real negative points and placed a wrong interpretation of students movement before the society.”

Biswaroop also alleged that by this act, the Vice Chancellor has tried to malign the image of the students amongst all. Similar views were expressed by Aritro Dhar, general Secretary of the AUSU. He too said that inspite of finding out the lacunae, the Vice Chancellor is busy searching for a scapegoat. This is not at all acceptable to the student community of the varsity.
