20 buildings in Assam University requisitioned by district admin as quarantine centres

May 22: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar in exercise of the power vested upon it vide section 34, subsection (a) and (j) of the District Disaster Management Act 2005 has requisitioned 20 buildings/ facilities of Assam University, Silchar for making Quarantine Centres and COVID Care Centres. These includes Hostels (existing and newly constructed), Mukta Mancha, Sports Complex. Student Amenity Centre. UN Brahma Hall, BR Community Hall, Canteen cum Departmental stores, Guest House, Kendriya Vidyalaya (existing and newly constructed), Day Care Centre etc. The requisition comes into force with immediate effect.

However, the University Administration has requested the District Administration to ensure adequate safety and security measures for staff who will be attending office and for all campus dwellers as there is only one gate for entry and exit in the campus. Further, the University authorities also stated that as per model guidelines of UGC/MHRD, academic classes in campus an supposed to start in July 2020, so they urged upon the district administration to inform the university the time period for which the 20 buildings were requisitioned by them.

At present, when the number of COVID-19 positive cases are increasing daily by leaps and bounds, it does not seem that the administration will be in a position to predict any specific time frame as regards the facilities requisitioned for quarantine centres as the number of COVID-19 positive cases are alarmingly increasing. Many affiliated colleges of Assam University like N.C. College, Badarpur, ALC College, Algapur, Lala Rural College, Jagannath Singh College, Nilambazar Colege, Swami Vivekananda College, RK. Nagar College, maibang Degree College etc. have also been requisitioned as quarantine centres.
