International Summit on Sustainable Development Begins at Assam University
মজবুত উন্নয়ন নিয়ে আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলন শুরু আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে

ওয়ে টু বরাক, ২৩ সেপ্টেম্বর : টেকসই উন্নয়ন, জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন, সামাজিক অন্তর্ভুক্তি এবং পরিবেশবান্ধব রূপান্তরের মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়ে বুধবার থেকে আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে শুরু হল দ্বিতীয় পর্যায়ের নর্থইস্ট ইন্টারন্যাশনাল সাসটেইনেবল সামিট। এবারের সম্মেলনের মূল বিষয় ‘নর্থইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া ইন দ্য গ্লোবাল সাসটেইনেবিলিটি এজেন্ডা: ইনোভেশন, ইনক্লুশন অ্যান্ড গ্রিন ট্রানজিশনস’।

এদিন সকালে বিপিনচন্দ্র পাল মিলনায়তনে প্রদীপ জ্বালিয়ে দুদিনের এই আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলনের সূচনা করেন উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক রাজীব মোহন পন্থ। স্বাগত বক্তব্যে সম্মেলনের আহ্বায়ক ড. লালজো এস. থাংজোম প্রথম পর্যায় থেকে দ্বিতীয় পর্যায় পর্যন্ত সম্মেলনের যাত্রাপথ তুলে ধরে টেকসই উন্নয়নের লক্ষ্যে ধারাবাহিক আলোচনা, সহযোগিতা ও সম্মিলিত উদ্যোগের গুরুত্বের কথা বলেন। এক্ষেত্রে একাডেমিক জ্ঞান, স্থানীয় অভিজ্ঞতা এবং টেকসই উন্নয়নের সমকালীন ধারণাগুলিকে একই মঞ্চে নিয়ে আসার প্রয়োজনীয়তার কথাও তুলে ধরেন তিনি।

সমাজকর্ম বিভাগের প্রধান অধ্যাপক তরুণ বিকাশ সুকাই সম্মেলনের দ্বিতীয় পর্যায়ের এই আয়োজনে সমাজকর্ম বিভাগের সম্মিলিত প্রচেষ্টার কথা উল্লেখ করেন। টেকসই উন্নয়ন, সামাজিক অন্তর্ভুক্তি এবং জনসম্পৃক্ততার মতো বিষয়গুলিতে সমাজকর্মের ভূমিকার গুরুত্বও তুলে ধরেন তিনি।

বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ডিন (অ্যাকাডেমিকস) অধ্যাপক চিররঞ্জন ভট্টাচার্য বলেন, জলবায়ুজনিত ঝুঁকি ও সম্পদের সংকট এখন আর দূরের আশঙ্কা নয়, বরং বর্তমান সময়ের বাস্তবতা। এই পরিস্থিতিতে ধারাবাহিক অ্যাকাডেমিক আলোচনা এবং সম্মিলিত উদ্যোগের প্রয়োজন রয়েছে বলে তিনি উল্লেখ করেন।

উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক পন্থ উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারতের অনন্য বৈচিত্র্য এবং টেকসই উন্নয়নের আলোচনায় এই অঞ্চলের গুরুত্বের কথা তুলে ধরেন। তিনি বলেন, সমৃদ্ধ জীববৈচিত্র্য, সাংস্কৃতিক বৈচিত্র্য, সম্প্রদায়ভিত্তিক ঐতিহ্য এবং অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক সামাজিক চর্চার মাধ্যমে উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারত বিশ্বব্যাপী টেকসই উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্যমাত্রা অর্জনের ক্ষেত্রে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রাখতে পারে।

উপাচার্য আরও উল্লেখ করেন, টেকসই উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্যমাত্রার সঙ্গে যুক্ত বহু মূল্যবোধ উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারতের বিভিন্ন জনগোষ্ঠীর সামাজিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক চর্চার মধ্যে ইতিমধ্যেই গভীরভাবে নিহিত রয়েছে। বর্তমান সামাজিক, পরিবেশগত ও উন্নয়নমূলক বাস্তবতার সঙ্গে সামঞ্জস্য রেখে এই মূল্যবোধগুলিকে আধুনিক ও সমকালীন দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিতে প্রয়োগ করাই মূল চ্যালেঞ্জ বলেও তিনি উল্লেখ করেন।

উদ্বোধনী পর্বের পর শাহজাহাল ইউনিভার্সিটি অব সোশ্যাল অ্যান্ড টেকনোলজি, বাংলাদেশের অধ্যাপক তুলসি কুমার দাস অনলাইনে মূল বিষয়ের ওপর আলোকপাত করেন। টেকসই উন্নয়ন ও পরিবেশবান্ধব রূপান্তর বিষয়ে বক্তব্য রাখতে গিয়ে তিনি টেকসই উন্নয়নের নীতিগুলিকে কীভাবে বাস্তবসম্মত পরিবেশবান্ধব রূপান্তরের পথে প্রয়োগ করা যায়, তা নিয়ে আলোচনা করেন। শেষে ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করেন অধ্যাপক এম তিনেশ্বরী দেবী। প্রসঙ্গত, এই সম্মেলন চলবে বৃহস্পতিবারও।

Way2barak, September 23 : The second edition of the Northeast International Sustainable Summit (NEISS) 2026 commenced at Assam University on Wednesday, bringing together academics, researchers and stakeholders to deliberate on critical issues such as sustainable development, climate change, social inclusion and green transitions. The central theme of this year’s summit is “Northeast India in the Global Sustainability Agenda: Innovation, Inclusion and Green Transitions.”

The two-day international summit was inaugurated in the morning at Bipin Chandra Pal Auditorium by Assam University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant, who formally opened the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

In his welcome address, the convenor of the summit, Dr. Lalzo S. Thangjom, traced the journey of the summit from its first edition to the second edition and emphasised the importance of sustained dialogue, collaboration and collective action in advancing the goals of sustainable development. He also highlighted the need to bring academic knowledge, local experiences and contemporary perspectives on sustainable development onto a common platform.

Prof. Tarun Bikash Sukai, Head of the Department of Social Work, highlighted the collective efforts of the Department of Social Work in organising the second edition of the summit. He also emphasised the significance of social work in areas such as sustainable development, social inclusion and community engagement.

Addressing the gathering, the Dean (Academics) of the university, Prof. Chiranjan Bhattacharjee, observed that climate-related risks and resource scarcity are no longer distant threats but present-day realities. He stressed the need for sustained academic discussions and collective initiatives to address these challenges.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pant highlighted the unique diversity of Northeast India and the importance of the region in discussions on sustainable development. He stated that the region, with its rich biodiversity, cultural diversity, community-based traditions and inclusive social practices, can make a significant contribution to the achievement of global Sustainable Development Goals.

The Vice-Chancellor further observed that many values associated with the Sustainable Development Goals are already deeply embedded in the social and cultural practices of various communities in Northeast India. He noted that the key challenge lies in applying these values through modern and contemporary perspectives while aligning them with present-day social, environmental and developmental realities.

Following the inaugural session, Prof. Tulsi Kumar Das of Shahjalal University of Social and Technology, Bangladesh, delivered an online keynote address on the central theme of the summit. Speaking on sustainable development and green transitions, he discussed how the principles of sustainable development can be applied to facilitate practical and environmentally sustainable transformations.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Prof. M. Tineswari Devi. The summit will continue on Thursday.
