Cachar observes World Environment Day with district-wide plantation drive

way2barak, June 5: In a concerted effort to promote environmental sustainability and strengthen green cover across the district, Cachar observed World Environment Day 2026 on 5th June, Friday through a series of plantation drives and awareness initiatives organized by various government departments and institutions under the guidance of the District Administration.
The district joined the State-wide plantation campaign envisioned by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam,Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, which aims to plant one crore saplings through 35 lakh Women Self-Help Group (SHG) members across the State. As part of the initiative, 1,49,365 SHG members under the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLM) in Cachar have pledged to plant 2,97,263 saplings.
A plantation programme was conducted at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) project site in the presence of representatives from AHIMDS, the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Project Management Consultant (PMC).
The Sericulture Department Cachar also organized plantation drives at Darmikhal Government Eri Seed Grainage, Pailapool Government Seri Farm and Harinagar Government Eri Seed Grainage, contributing to the district-wide afforestation initiative.
Observance of World Environment Day was also held in the offices of the Executive Engineer, PWRD, Silchar and Udharbond Territorial Road Division, as well as the PWRD Dholai and Sonai Territorial Road Divisions, where officers and staff members participated in sapling plantation activities and renewed their commitment towards environmental protection.

The Office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner, Silchar, marked the occasion through plantation and awareness activities.
At the Udharbond Revenue Circle Office, a plantation drive was organized within the office premises. The programme was attended by the Circle Officer, SDM and Head of Office, Block Development Officer, Block Elementary Education Officer, Field Officer (Disaster Management), NDRF Inspector, officials and staff members of the Circle Office, along with members of the District Disaster Response Force (DDRF), Circle Quick Response Team (CQRT) and Aapda Mitra volunteers. During the programme, speakers highlighted the importance of environmental conservation, sustainable development and the collective responsibility of safeguarding natural resources for future generations. More than fifty saplings were planted during the drive as a symbol of commitment towards enhancing the district’s green cover.
The Dholai Co-District Office also observed World Environment Day through a plantation programme involving officers and staff members.
The district-wide observance witnessed enthusiastic participation from government departments, SHG members, volunteers and local stakeholders. Plantation drives were undertaken across the district as part of the observance.
Meanwhile, the District Administration, Cachar has also appealed to all citizens to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts by planting, protecting and nurturing saplings, thereby contributing towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future.
