ওয়ে টু বরাক, ২৫ মে : ডিমা হাসাও জেলায় এক বিরল ফুলগাছের সন্ধান পাওয়া গেছে। এই বিরল প্রজাতির উদ্ভিদটির নাম হেলিওট্রোপিয়াম ওভাটাম। হেলিওট্রোপিয়াসি পরিবারের অন্তর্গত এই উদ্ভিদটি ডিমা হাসাও জেলার জাটিঙ্গা পার্বত্য এলাকায় গবেষকদের ফিল্ড ওয়ার্কের সময় শনাক্ত করা হয়। গবেষণাটি যৌথ ভাবে পরিচালনা করেন আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গবেষক কঙ্কন কুমার দাস ও মেঘালয়ের ইউনিভার্সিটি অব সায়েন্স অ্যান্ড টেকনোলজির সেলিম মেহমুদ। নেতৃত্বে ছিলেন আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের জীববিজ্ঞানের অধ্যাপক দেবজ্যোতি ভট্টাচার্য। তাঁদের এই আবিষ্কারের ফলে প্রজাতিটি প্রথমবারের মতো দেশের মূল ভূখণ্ডে নথিভুক্ত হল এবং দেশের মধ্যে এর বিস্তৃতি সম্পর্কে নতুন তথ্য সামনে এলো। সম্প্রতি গবেষণার ফলাফল ন্যাশনাল অ্যাকাডেমি সায়েন্স লেটার্স পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত হয়েছে।

প্রসঙ্গত, এতদিন দেশের মাটিতে এই বিরল প্রজাতির উদ্ভিদের উপস্থিতি শুধুমাত্র আন্দামান ও নিকোবর দ্বীপপুঞ্জেই পাওয়া যেত। অরুণাচল প্রদেশ থেকে আগে কিছু প্রতিবেদনে এর উল্লেখ থাকলেও পরবর্তী শ্রেণিবিন্যাসগত পর্যালোচনায় সেগুলি গ্রহণযোগ্য বলে বিবেচিত হয়নি। তবে মায়ানমার ও থাইল্যান্ডে এই উদ্ভিদের অস্তিত্বের খবর রয়েছে। গবেষকদের মতে, বোটানিক্যাল সার্ভে অব ইন্ডিয়ার ডিজিটাল হার্বেরিয়াম এবং উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারত ও কলকাতার বিভিন্ন প্রধান হার্বেরিয়ামের নথি পর্যালোচনা করে দেখা গেছে, এর আগে দেশের মূল ভূখণ্ড থেকে এই উদ্ভিদের কোনও প্রমাণিত নমুনা পাওয়া যায়নি।

গবেষণাপত্রে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, আসামের এই সংগ্রহই ভারতের মূল ভূখণ্ডে হেলিওট্রোপিয়াম ওভাটামের প্রথম নিশ্চিত নথিভুক্তি। জাটিঙ্গা পাহাড়ের এক ঝরনার পাশে বড় বড় পাথরের মধ্যে সরাসরি সূর্যের আলো প্রাপ্ত এলাকায় উদ্ভিদটি পাওয়া যায়। গবেষকরা সেখানে মাত্র পাঁচ থেকে ছয়টি পূর্ণ গাছ শনাক্ত করেছেন। প্রায় দুই মিটার উচ্চতাসম্পন্ন এই ঝোপে শাখাবিশিষ্ট পুষ্প-মঞ্জরিতে সারিবদ্ধভাবে সবুজ-সাদা ফুল ফোটে। এর ফুল ফোটার সময় কাল নভেম্বর থেকে ডিসেম্বর বলে নথিভুক্ত হয়েছে।

গবেষকরা শুধু ভারতের মূল ভূখণ্ডে এর উপস্থিতিই নিশ্চিত করেননি, বরং প্রজাতিটির একটি পূর্বে অজানা শারীরিক বৈশিষ্ট্যও শনাক্ত করেছেন, যা ভবিষ্যৎ গবেষণার ক্ষেত্রে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ তথ্য হিসেবে বিবেচিত হবে। বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে, এই আবিষ্কার অঞ্চলের জীববৈচিত্র্য গবেষণায় নতুন মাত্রা যোগ করবে এবং আসাম ও আন্দামান-নিকোবরের মধ্যে এক অনন্য উদ্ভিদগত সংযোগও তুলে ধরবে।

New Evidence of Assam–Andaman Biodiversity Link

Way2barak, May 25 : A rare flowering plant species has been discovered in the Jatinga Hills of Dima Hasao district. The species, Heliotropium ovatum, belonging to the family Heliotropiaceae, was identified during fieldwork conducted by researchers from Assam University and the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya.

The study was carried out by Kankan Kumar Das, researcher of Assam University & Selim Mehmud of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya under the able guidance of Prof. Debjyoti Bhattacharyya, Dept of Life Science & Bioinformatics, Assam University. Their findings mark the first confirmed record of Heliotropium ovatum from mainland India, significantly expanding the known distribution range of the species within the country. The research findings have recently been published in the journal National Academy Science Letters.

Until now, the species had been reported in India only from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Although earlier reports mentioned its occurrence in Arunachal Pradesh, subsequent taxonomic reviews did not validate those records. The plant is, however, known to occur in Myanmar and Thailand. According to the researchers, a detailed examination of the digital herbarium of the Botanical Survey of India and major herbaria in northeastern India and Kolkata revealed no previously authenticated mainland Indian specimens of the species.

The research paper states that the Assam collection represents the first confirmed mainland Indian record of Heliotropium ovatum. The plant was found growing among large rocks near a stream in the Jatinga Hills, in an area receiving direct sunlight. Researchers located only five to six mature individuals at the site. The shrub can grow up to two metres in height and bears clusters of greenish-white flowers arranged in branched inflorescences. Flowering has been recorded between November and December. In addition to confirming the species’ presence in mainland India, the researchers also identified a previously undocumented morphological characteristic of the plant. This newly observed feature is expected to provide valuable information for future taxonomic and ecological studies.

Experts believe the discovery adds a new dimension to biodiversity research in the region and highlights a unique botanical connection between Assam and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, offering fresh insights into the distribution and evolution of plant species across these geographically distant regions.
