Violence hit Manipur’s relief camp to be newborn’s first home

way2barak, May 7 : The refugees at Mantripukhri relief camp in Imphal West district in Manipur were jubilant to hear the cries of the newly born baby, delivered by a 38-year-old mother Esther Hontah.

According to a defence spokesman, over 3,000 refugees were sheltered at Mantripukhri relief camp after the ethnic violence broke out in Imphal West district since May 3.

Pregnant Hontah, wife of Imphal based DM College’s Assistant Professor Sanlen Hontah, was rescued by Assam Rifles and given shelter to the Mantripukhri relief camp, operated by the para-military force.

A team of doctors conducted the successful c-section delivery of the baby on Sunday and declared both mother and child healthy.

The defence PRO said that nearly 3,000 refugees, including women and children, were sheltered in the Mantripukhri camp and all, despite their distress, are elated and motivated to hear the successful delivery of the baby.

The woman and her husband wholeheartedly expressed their gratitude to the team of doctors and Assam Rifles for the intricate aid and selfless support extended during the hard time for the family.

The Army and the Assam Rifles, which has been deployed since May 3 to provide security to the people in violence-hit Manipur and rescuing around 25,000 civilians of different communities in several districts and were provided shelter in their bases and garrisons.
