CM Assam gives financial aid to 318 members of 6 armed groups who joined mainstream

way2barak, Oct.31: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday gave away financial aid to 318 members of 6 armed groups who joined mainstream. They include 127 from United Gorkha People’s Organization (UGPO), 74 from Tiwa Liberation Army (TLA), 38 from Kuki National Liberation Army (KNLA), 33 from Kuki Liberation Front (KLF), 35 from United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) & 11 from Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA). To date, the Assam government has provided aid to 6,740 ultras who gave up arms & 3,276 given skill training.

Himanta Biswa Sarma while distributing financial grants to some 318 surrendered ultras belonging to at least five militant organizations at a function in Guwahati said, “People of Assam today desire peace & prosperity. Hence, my appeal to ULFA leadership to give up the path of violence to help usher in peace & progress in our State. Also appeal to those who received financial aid to utilise the money in productive pursuits only.”

“We are thinking to bring in a policy or scheme for mass employment opportunities for the youths of the state. If the surrendered militants who have been already provided with financial grants showcase their skills and utilize the fund in a productive way, the government may include them under other government schemes too,” added the Chief Minister.
