Water level in Barak decreasing, but many areas in Silchar town submerged

May 21: Due to incessant rainfall since the last few days, the water level of river Barak started to rise. However,  on Saturday, the water level at Annapurna Ghat was gradually decreasing. From 5 AM on Saturday, the water level of Barak came down from 21.17 mtr to 20.94 mt at 5 PM. As per report received from Assam Water Resource Department, river Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar at 1 PM on Saturday, was flowing much still above the danger level and was recorded at 20.95 metres. The danger level at this point is 19.83 metre. The water level is decreasing at 1 cm per hour at 4 PM.

However, on the contrary, flood water has submerged many parts of Silchar town. Moreover, in the town area, the water level was gradually rising. Since Friday afternoon, flood water engulfed Bilpar, Chamragudam, Mondir Dighi, Chandicharan Road Public School Lane, Shyamananda Ashram Road, Netaji School Road, Kanakpur, Madhurband, Sashan Road and some other areas. Water has also entered into many lanes and by-lanes of the adjacent areas. On Saturday afternoon, it was observed that the level of water in these areas was considerably rising.

Meanwhile water level at Chenkuri 33/11 KV sub-station reached almost the danger level. To avoid any untoward incident, the whole sub station will be kept under shutdown until the water recedes. This was infomed as informed by APDCL, Silchar. The areas where power supply has been disrupted are Civil Hospital, Panpatty, ambicapatty, Chenkuri road, Bilpar, Public School Road, Rangirkhari, Hospital Road, Link Road, National Highway, Bhagatpur etc. “We are trying hard to evacuate power to these areas from other 33/11 KV sub stations via different 11 KV feeders, stated APDCL.

While interacting with way2barak, residents of Bilpar stated that the water now in the area is increasing rapidly since morning. Most of the houses in the area are submerged. Water in Mandir Dighi area is upto the waist level. Though electricity has been snapped yet the most severe crisis the people are facing now is that of water. People of the area are now purchasing packaged drinking water. In other parts of the town too, the issue of drinking water has become a major crisis, although in certain areas, administration has sent water tankers.

Meanwhile, many persons whose houses were flooded had to take place either in relief camps or to houses of others. Many have expressed surpise in social media platforms as regards the increase in water level in the town areas of Silchar at a time when the river water was decreasing.
