Flood: 56,000 people affected in 222 villages of Assam; multiple relief camps opened in Cachar

May 15: Torrential rains in the last few days has resulted in rise of water level in all the major rivers of the state and several rivers are flowing above the danger level mark at many places in Assam. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Dima Hasao district was the worst affected.

The heavy rainfall in the state worsened the flood situation also in Cachar, Karimganj, Dhemaji, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Nalbari and Nagaon. Relief camps were opened at several places in Assam on Sunday to assist people affected by the floods caused by the incessant rainfall. Till now, a total of 56,000 people in 222 villages of the state were affected by the flood.

DC Cachar in a relief camp at Borkhola

Cachar district seems to be one of the most affected place. A total of 12 relief camps were opened till now. A total of 41,000 people in 138 villages in Cachar were affected by flood. Deputy Commissioner Cachar, Keerthi Jalli on Sunday visited the Relief Camp setup for people of Borkhola and inspected the preparations done there. The relief camp was opened there at a school in Borkhola. Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy along with BJP District president and other BJP workers visited the flood affected areas of Katigorah constituency.

Moreover, due to heavy rainfall, Rail and road services were also severely affected. Several people got stranded at Ditokcherra and New Haflong stations. They were, however, later on evacuated. Many were even airlifted by the Indian Air Force from Ditokcherra to Silchar.
