Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi pays courtesy visit to Kalayani Hospital, meets Dr Kumar Kanti Das

April 16: Union Minister of State for External Affairs & Culture, Meenakshi Lekhi who was on a tour of Barak Valley paid a courtesy to Sundari Mohan Seva Bhawan (Kalayani Hospital) in Srikona, Cachar on Friday and met with renowned physician Dr Kumar Kanti Das, better known as Dr Lakhan Das, an eminent personality in the field of surgery in Assam. The Union Minister was accompanied by Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy & MLA Dipayan Chakraborty.

Expressing his views, Dr Rajdeep Roy said, “Dr Kumar Kanti “Bhagwan” Das has been an inspiration for his ”Pracharak-like” lifestyle, his simplicity and his philanthropic services. Personally admire him not just for his surgical skills but for his decision to come back to India after completing his higher education in the States and serve his own and poor people of the area. His interest in adventure sports keeps him on his toes from sunrise to sunset and even beyond even at this age !”

“Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi paid a courtesy visit at his hospital and exchanged pleasantries. We wish him long and healthy life and many more years of public service,” added Dr Roy.

Dr Kumar Kanti Das completed his matriculation in 1958 from Imphal and his ISC from St. Edmund’s College in Shillong. He then went to Calcutta to complete his MBBS from Calcutta National Medical College in 1968. After this, he went to Safdar Jung Hospital, New Delhi and stayed there from 1965 to 1967. Then from 1967 to 1985 he underwent training in Binghamton, New York. This training period lasted from 1967 to 1972 and he practiced there from 1973 to 1985.

After his return to India, he joined the Red Cross Hospital in Silchar where he served from 1987 to 2004. He is also associated with the Cancer Hospital and has worked in many places like Karimganj, Hailakandi and many other places in the Cachar District of Assam which is one of the most Cancer prone areas in the country. Since 1992, till date, he has been rendering his services in Sundari Mohan Seva Bhawan (Kalayani Hospital) in Srikona, Assam.
