Himanta Biswa contemplates forthcoming Panchayat polls without any party symbol

Feb. 7: “It was my wish that the ensuing Municipal elections in Assam be held without any party symbols. However, due to shortage of time, it was not possible to do it this time as because it would require consensus among the political parties followed by amendment in the existing Act. However, for the forthcoming Panchayat Elections, a state wise brainstorming can be started from now as regards conducting the same by the candidates without any party symbol.” This was stated by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press conference held on Monday at Janata Bhawan, Dispur.

He further said, “Various states, such as, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh etc. does not allot party symbols to the candidates contesting civic polls. In order to achieve the vision envisaged by Mahatma Gandhi as regards an ideal village, the non-involvement of political parties is a must. In such cases, the best individuals of the society will come forward and contest the elections at the Panchayat level. And gradually, a good environment can be witnessed.” He, however, added that this is not any decision, but just a personal wish.

“In a democratic set-up, the thoughts of the Chief Minister cannot be taken to be the final decision. But what I want is a healthy debate by the people on this issue. But this was my desire during the municipal polls. However, as we could not do it at the municipal level this year, so I urge upon all to think about it. This would provide an opportunity to the best and committed individuals to come forward and take the reigns of the local government in their hands,” said CM Dr Sarma.

He further appealed to all political parties including the BJP to give nomination to those capable persons who would be able to give proper leadership to their local areas and address local issues aptly.
