Aug. 14: Once again tension mounted in the Assam- Mizoram border after alleged grenade attack by Mizo miscreants in a school at Kachurthal area of Hailakandi district. As per the locals, they heard a loud bang at around 11.30 PM on Friday. At once, they rushed out and found that the Sahebmara LP School under Ramnathpur Police Station was damaged. The plaster of the school walls fell apart and also they noticed a big hole in the floor. This led to a situation of panic among the local populace.
Gourav Upadhyay, Superintendent of Police, Hailakandi rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. He interacted with the locals and asked the forces of the local police station to remain alert. A resident of the area who stays in the vicinity of the school said, “What came as a surprise to the people was the audacity of the Mizo miscreants who by their violent activities were vitiating the ongoing peace process between the two states.”
However, as the school was closed due to outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic and moreover, as the incident took place in the night, there was no loss of life. But such an incident, just a day ahead of the 75th Independence Day has indeed become a major cause of concern for the inhabitants who dwell in the Assam- Mizoram border.
The modus operandi by the miscreants is nothing new. In the past, similar incidents of attacking schools in the border areas by the Mizo miscreants has taken place. Earlier, Muliala LP School under Ramnathpur PS in Hailakandi also came under grenade attacks. Apart from this, on the Cachar side of the territory of Assam, Mizo miscreants bombed Dholakhal LP School under Dholai PS. Though there were no loss of life in these two incidents of violence, but the schools were partially damaged.
After the violent attack on Assam Police personnel by Mizo forces along with Mizo miscreants, 6 persons lost their lives and around 40 of them were injured at Lailapur in Assam- Mizoram border on 26 July. Though initially, Assam government took a stern stand, but later two ministers were deputed by the Chief Minister of Assam to Aizawl to initiate peace process, following which, both the states agreed to station central forces at the borders.
However, after the grenade attack by alleged Mizo miscreants on Friday at a school located at Hailakandi in the Assam- Mizoram border, people residing at Kachurthal area have expressed deep resentment. “They killed 6 of our policemen and 1 civilian, injured 40 others in last month in Cachar. In the past too, they bombed our schools as they did yesterday, yet no strict action were taken against the Mizos. This is indeed very frustrating for us. Had the state and the central government taken drastic steps against Mizo aggression and acts of violence after the Lailapur incident, then they would not have dared to bomb our school yesterday. We are now scared of our safety and security and urge upon the state government to resolve this issue with an iron hand,” commented an elderly of Kachurthal area of Hailakandi district.
