CM announces ₹50 lakh to next of the kin of deceased; seek Apex Court’s intervention to protect forest land

July 27: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma who visited Silchar today, amid Assam-Mizoram border row which witnessed losing of five Assam Police personnel, said that Assam would not spare even an inch of its land to Mizoram as the government has decided to deploy three commando battalions in Cachar, Karimgaj and Hailakandi districts bordering Mizoram to keep the border situation under control.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma after reaching Silchar straightway rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital where injured security personnel who bore the brunt of firing from across the border of Mizoram were admitted and receiving treatment. Dr. Sarma taking stock of their treatment asked the Principal Silchar Medical College and Hospital Dr. Babul Bezbaruah to ensure their good treatment. He also said that if required the injured police personnel should be shifted to Guwahati or elsewhere for advanced treatment.

Paying his last respect to the brave hearts who sustained bullet wounds and succumbed to their injuries, Dr. Sarma also laid wreaths to their mortal remains. Besides announcing ex-gratia amounting to Rs. 50 lakh to the next of the kin of each deceased, Dr. Sarma also announced government job for one member of the family of the deceased. He also said that all the police personnel sustained injuries will be entitled to Rs. 1 lakh government help. Moreover, the Assam Police Personnel deployed along the 164.6 Assam-Mizoram border will get additional salary of one month.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma also said that clear evidences are emerging which conclusively show that Mizoran Police and their supported elements are behind in fomenting trouble across the border. He also said that Assam will seek the intervention of the Supreme Court for the protection of Inner-line Forest Reserve from destruction and encroachment.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma has however, made it unequivocally clear that Assam is a responsible state which can not tolerate the lives of innocent civilians being lost in border skirmishes. He also said that there is no question of retaliation, as Assam respects the life of every individual. Later Chief Minister Dr. Sarma held a meeting to review law and order situation prevailing in Barak Valley particularly in Cachar district.

Information and Public Relations Minister Pijush Hazarika, GDD and UDD Minister Ashok Singhal, MLAs, DGP Bhsakar Jyoti Mahanta and several senior civil and police officers accompanied the Chief Minister during his visit.
