Alumnus of Assam Univ, 25-year Sonali Das from Silcoorie die due to kidney failure

July 11: Since the last few days two posts in social media were indeed very disturbing. Both the posts were related to two girls from Cachar whose kidneys were totally damaged and were on dialysis. One is Sucharita Bhattacharjee from Silchar and the other is Sonali Das from Silcoorie Grant in Cachar. Due to financial crunch, they were unable to get the desired treatment. Their well-wishers had put up posts in Facebook trying to generate funds for their kidney transplant.

Sonali Das (25) after completing her graduation from Women’s College, Silchar did her post graduation in Bengali from Assam University. Just after that, she was having some physical problems. The doctors in Silchar revealed that her both the kidneys have stopped functioning. She was on regular dialysis. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, she faced difficulties in availing treatment properly.

Meanwhile, she was also taken to Guwahati for a few days for treatment. However, the expenses required for kidney transplantation was huge and it seemed very difficult for the family of Sonali to bear the expenses. Her well-wishers tried for crowd funding through social media, but the amount accumulated was also not enough. Meanwhile, she was taken to Bengaluru. The doctors there insisted on a quick transplant without wasting much time as her condition deteriorated.

She was on dialysis in a private hospital in Bengaluru. In the meantime, the kidney of her mother matched and the doctors were carrying on tests prior to the transplant. However, before the kidney transplantation could take place, Sonali Das lost the battle and breathed her last at 3.50 AM on 11 July at the hospital in Bengaluru.

One of her classmates in Assam University, Abhik Das recalls, the post graduation days and said, “She was a very jovial girl. She was fighting for a new lease of life. However, death cut short her life and she left us all. It’s indeed a very sad moment for all of us who knew her.” Sonali Das is survived by her parents and a brother just 2 years senior to her.
