June 20: Illegal trade of wild species of animals and birds has become rampant. Off and on, such illegal trade of wild variety are reported. On Sunday, wildlife lovers “Wild & Free” got a rescue call from a local resident of Malugram, Silchar. It was informed that some young boys captured many Egrets and were taking them along. At once, the members of “Wild & Free” rushed to the spot and somehow rescued the flock of birds. On counting, they found that a total of 22 little Egrets were there.

Expressing their views, the youths operating ‘Wild & Free’ said, “On rescuing the 22 Egrets, we at once informed the Forest Department and handed over the creatures to them. However, out of the 22 Egrets, we gave 20 of them to the Forest officials. We retained two of them in our shelter as their wings were fractured. After proper treatment, these two will also be handed over to the Forest Department. The Forest officials later on released the 20 birds into the wild habitat.”

Egrets are herons that have white or buff plumage, develop fine plumes during the breeding season. Egrets are not a biologically distinct group from herons and have the same build. Many species live primarily in shallow aquatic areas, like ponds, streams, lakes, marshes, wetlands, and more. They search for food in shallow waters, both saltwater and freshwater. Some species also live in agricultural fields, flooded meadows, and even dry areas like farms.

It needs mention here that a few days ago, “Wild & Free” also rescued 3 white cranes from Vivekananda Road area of Silchar and handed over them to the Forest Department.
