Multifarious activities conducted by Inner Wheel Club, Silchar in post-flood period

Aug. 5: A plethora of activities were undertaken by the members of Inner Wheel Club, Silchar (IWC) in the post-flood period. The club members primarily involved themselves in philanthropic activities during the month to help the victims of the recent devastating flood, which caused havoc in Silchar and its surroundings.

Amidst miseries of daily struggle to earn livelihood, the sudden lash of torrential rain and ensuing flood left people from the downtrodden belt miserable once again. with a view to offer a minimum support, Inner Wheel Club (IWC), Silchar reached to the still inundated parts of Chencoorie in Silchar town. The members of Inner Wheel Club, Silchar reached Chencoorie area of Silchar by boat and distributed essential relief commodities among the people there who still were braving the flood water. A total of 110 beneficiaries were provided packaged drinking water, lime, anti-fungal medicine and biscuits. An amount of Rs. 18,000 was spent for this purpose.

A news report on the devastating floods by BBC where a lady from Borkhola constituency was narrating the traumatic saga of how she failed to save her husband’s life because of the water logging and even had to wait whole night in “Bhura” (makeshift boat made with banana tree) with the dead body for performing the last rights next day somehow. The news was so heart wrenching and painful. Inner Wheel Club, Silchar managed to locate the whereabouts of that family and started for the remote village. Inner Wheel Club donated Rs. 5, 000 to the widow and her 3 children. The journey was quite a difficult one. We had to travel by car, ride a boat and walk through the hazardous muddy terrain. Though the sum was negligible compared to the needs, but still it could bring a smile on her face

Inner Wheel Club, Silchar conducted a flood relief campaign at Baijaintapur GP. Three other Clubs of District 324 contributed generously to help them. These 3 Clubs are: IWC Darjeeling, IWC Siliguri Subby & IWC Shillong. Also, IWC Silchar collected themselves a good amount to help the marginalized affected by flood. On 26 July, 2022, the members of IWC Silchar went to Baijaintipur GP at Silchar and distributed flood relief kits comprising of mattress, mosquito net, 2 pillows, household utensils, medicine, bleaching powder and sanitizer. On 29 July, 2022, IWC went to Bethukandi GP and also distributed similar kits among the flood victims. Approximately, the total expenditure for this project was Rs. 68,700.

Health problem in adolescent period of girls is a serious matter. Considering this fact, Inner Wheel Club of Silchar organised a ‘Health Camp’ at ‘Chhotelal Seth Institute’ at Silchar which is a state
Govt. recognised girl’s high school situated at Silchar, Cachar, Assam, on 29th of July, 2022. In the Camp, 150 students of Class IX & Class X were done Free blood test to detect their Hemoglobin percentage, Blood groups & RH factor of the blood. IWC Silchar hired the technician from ‘Silchar
Medical College nd Hospital ‘ to draw & collect the blood sample and made the tests done in a
renowned pathological Lab. in Silchar & made the laboratory payment by their own collection / fund. In the Camp, the health problem of pre & post menstruation period of girls were checked and follow proper guidelines were provided by Dr. Samujjwal Bhattacharjee and Dr. Purba Mazumder.

Ramakrishna Vivekananda Society started a free coaching centre at Baulabasti in Borkhola constituency of Cachar district in Assam. Inner Wheel Club, Silchar on 4 August, 2022 went to this study centre and distributed books and food items among the students of this centre who belong to the marginalised sections of the society.

President of Inner Wheel club, Silchar Sampa Banik, Secretary Madhuparna Basak, Treasurer Moumita Gupta, Editor Moutushi Roy, Mousumi Saha, Debjani Roy among others were present in these various programmes.
