Election to the office of President of India to be held before 24 July, 2022

June 9: The term of office of Ram Nath Kovind, President of India, is ending on 24 July, 2022. As per Article 62 of the Constitution of India, an election to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the term of office of the outgoing President is required to be completed before the expiration of the term.

Article 324 of the Constitution read with the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and the Presidential and Vice – Presidential Elections Rules, 1974 vests the superintendence, direction and control of the conduct of election to the office of the President of India in the Election Commission of India.

The election for the next President of India will be held on July 18. The counting of votes will take place on July 21 and the new president will take oath on July 25. Notification for the presidential election will be issued on June 15 and the last day of filing a nomination will be June 29. The papers will be scrutinised on June 30. The last day to withdraw the nomination papers will be July 2.

President is elected through an electoral college system in which elected MPs and MLAs from states/UTs cast votes. While the value of votes of every MP is fixed, value of MLAs’ votes differ based on their states’ population. The votes are given on ballot paper in order of preferences for the candidates, least-voted of whom get eliminated one by one.
