Cachar admn gears up for panchayat election

way2barak, April 19:– In a detailed and informative press briefing held on Saturday at the new conference hall of the Cachar District Commissioner’s office, District Commissioner Mridul Yadav laid out an extensive roadmap of the district’s readiness for the upcoming Panchayat Election 2025. Addressing the media with clarity and confidence, DC Mridul Yadav reaffirmed the administration’s unwavering commitment to conducting a free, fair, inclusive, and peaceful electoral exercise, reflecting the spirit of democratic governance in the Cachar district.
Shedding light on the voter demographics, the District Commissioner informed that the district now houses a total of 10,60,155 registered voters, which includes 5,31,661 male voters, 5,28,479 female voters, and 15 voters from the third gender category. To facilitate smooth voting, a total of 1,706 polling stations have been arranged across the district. Of these, 1,620 are situated within Cachar proper, supplemented by 86 auxiliary booths. Additionally, the Lakhipur subdivision will see the setup of 310 polling stations, bolstered by six auxiliary booths. Notably, 274 polling stations, including 19 in the Lakhipur subdivision, will be exclusively operated by women officials, underlining the administration’s drive toward gender inclusion and empowerment. The district will also host 490 polling stations classified under the P-2 category.
The briefing further outlined the status of nominations received across the three tiers of the Panchayati Raj institutions. In the Zila Parishad segment, 64 nominations have been validated, with two candidates already declared elected unopposed and no rejections recorded. For the Anchalik Panchayat Member posts, 381 candidates have been found valid following the rejection of 13 nominations, while 35 candidates have secured their seats uncontested. At the Gram Panchayat Member level, 4,051 candidates are in the contest after 106 nomination papers were cancelled, and 319 candidates have been elected unopposed.
Ensuring operational smoothness, the administration has deployed a well-structured team comprising 25 Zonal Officers and 125 Sector Officers to oversee the electoral proceedings across the district. Logistical arrangements have been strategically planned, with the ISBT complex in Ramnagar designated as the central ballot box receiving and submission point for the Udharbond and Sonai Legislative Assembly segments, as well as for the remaining four assembly constituencies. For the Lakhipur segment, these operations will be managed from the office of the Lakhipur Block Development Officer.
Complementing the administrative readiness, Superintendent of Police, Cachar, Numal Mahatta addressed the media on the comprehensive security architecture laid out by the district police. “Our objective is to ensure that the entire polling and counting process is conducted in an environment of absolute safety and impartiality. We have undertaken elaborate area domination exercises, intelligence coordination, and vulnerability mapping. Special emphasis is being laid on sensitive and hyper-sensitive polling stations, where additional forces will be deployed. Adequate patrolling teams, Quick Response Teams (QRTs), and mobile surveillance units will remain active throughout the district. Moreover, preventive actions under relevant legal provisions are already underway to ensure no disruption to public peace during the electoral process,” SP Mahatta affirmed.
