Sudden fall in oxygen level on Monday night; ex-CM Tarun Gogoi given plasma & oxygen

August 31: The condition of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi suddenly deteriorated at around 11.30 PM on Monday night. The former Chief Minister who is at present admitted at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) after being detected COVID-19 had a sudden fall in Oxygen saturation to 88 percent on Monday night. The team of Doctors supervising his health immediately decided to give 1 unit of plasma with 2 litres of oxygen on Mask. Afterwards in the night, his oxygen saturation was maintained between 96 to 97 percent.

On getting the information, State Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, a former trusted aide of octogenarian Gogoi rushed at midnight to GMCH and asked the team of doctors to do the needful. In a late night tweet at 2.21 AM, Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “I was there with Sri @tarun_gogoi in the hospital and just reached back home as I have assembly tomorrow. Also had a telephonic conversation with @GauravGogoiAsm. I shall remain in touch with our team at @GMCHGuwahati.”

A committee under the Chairmanship of Dr Jogesh Sarma, HOD, Pulmonary Medicine Department of Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) has been constituted to monitor the health status of Tarun Gogoi, former Chief Minister of Assam. Dr. Bhaskar Thakuria, Assistant Professor of Medicine was asked to submit the medical status report of Gogoi every day at 5.00 PM. The following doctors were appointed in the monitoring committee:

  • Dr. Uma Kaimal Saikia, Associate Prof of Endocrinology
  • Dr. Farhin lqbal, Associate Prof of Cardiology
  • Dr. Bhaskar Thakuria, Asstt Prof of Medicine
  • Dr. R. Das, Asstt. Prof of Surgery
  • Dr. Biswajit Talukdar, Registrar of Anesthesiology
  • Dr. Jayshri Medhi, Post PG of Medicine
  • Dr. Moinul Islam, Resident doctor of Medicine
  • Dr. Bubu Gogoi, Resident doctor of Medicine
