Prof. Parthankar attends International Conference at Oxford
অক্সফোর্ডে আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলনে যোগ দিলেন অধ্যাপক পার্থঙ্কর

ওয়ে টু বরাক, ১৮ জুন : আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পরিবেশবিদ্যা ও পরিবেশবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের অধ্যাপক পার্থঙ্কর চৌধুরী ব্রিটেনের অক্সফোর্ড ব্রুকস বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অনুষ্ঠিত আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলনে অংশ নিলেন। ১৪ থেকে ১৭ জুন পর্যন্ত আয়োজিত এই সম্মেলনে বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশের গবেষক, বিশেষজ্ঞ ও প্রতিনিধিরা যোগ দেন। সম্মেলনে অধ্যাপক চৌধুরী ‘অসমে মানুষ-হাতি সংঘাত কমানোর দুটি প্রতিরোধমূলক পদ্ধতির তুলনামূলক মূল্যায়ন’ শীর্ষক একটি গবেষণাপত্র উপস্থাপন করেন।

গবেষণায় অসমের নগাঁও জেলার সোয়াং সংরক্ষিত অরণ্য এলাকায় মানুষ-হাতি সংঘাত কমানোর ক্ষেত্রে দুটি পদ্ধতির কার্যকারিতা যাচাই করা হয়েছে। পদ্ধতি দুটি হলো— স্বল্পক্ষমতাসম্পন্ন বৈদ্যুতিক বেড়া স্থাপন ও হাতির খাদ্য হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত পশুখাদ্য ফসলের চাষ। এই দুই পদ্ধতির মধ্যে কোনটি সংঘাত নিরসনে বেশি উপযোগী, তা নিরূপণের চেষ্টা করা হয়েছে গবেষণায়। অধ্যাপক চৌধুরীকে এই গবেষণার কাজে সহায়তা করেছেন ড. জে বি বৈশ্য ও ড. এন আর তালুকদার।

সম্মেলনের আয়োজক সংস্থা মানুষ ও বন্যপ্রাণীর সম্পর্ক, সহাবস্থান এবং বন্যপ্রাণীর ওপর মানবীয় কর্মকাণ্ডের প্রভাব নিয়ে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে কাজ করে আসছে। মানুষ ও বন্যপ্রাণীর মধ্যে টেকসই ও সুস্থ সহাবস্থান নিশ্চিত করার লক্ষ্যে উদ্ভূত নানা সমস্যার সমাধান খোঁজাই সংস্থাটির মূল উদ্দেশ্য। পাশাপাশি বন্যপ্রাণী সংরক্ষণে মানবিক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গির গুরুত্ব বাড়ানো এবং এই ক্ষেত্রের পেশাগত দক্ষতা উন্নয়নেও তারা কাজ করে যাচ্ছে।

এবারের সম্মেলনের মূল প্রতিপাদ্য ছিল ‘বন্যপ্রাণী ও মানবকল্যাণ’। সম্মেলনে মানুষ ও প্রকৃতির নিবিড় সম্পর্ক, শিল্প-সংস্কৃতিতে বন্যপ্রাণীর প্রভাব, কৃষি ও খাদ্য উৎপাদনের সঙ্গে বন্যপ্রাণীর সম্পর্ক, মানুষ-বন্যপ্রাণী সংঘাত ও সহাবস্থান, বন্যপ্রাণী সম্পর্কিত সামাজিক মূল্যবোধ এবং মানুষ ও প্রাণীর পারস্পরিক সম্পর্কসহ বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় নিয়ে আলোচনা হয়। বিশ্বের নানা দেশের তিন শতাধিক অংশগ্রহণকারী, প্রতিনিধি ও বিশেষজ্ঞ এই সম্মেলনে মতবিনিময় করেন। বন্যপ্রাণীর সুস্থ ও টেকসই অস্তিত্ব রক্ষার লক্ষ্যে আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যায়ে অনুষ্ঠিত এই আলোচনায় অধ্যাপক পার্থঙ্কর চৌধুরীর গবেষণাপত্র বিশেষ গুরুত্ব পেয়েছে বলে জানা গেছে।

Way2barak, June 18 : Prof. Parthankar Choudhury of the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Assam University, participated in an international conference held at Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom. The four-day conference, organized from June 14 to 17, brought together researchers, experts, and delegates from various countries across the world. During the event, Prof. Choudhury presented a research paper titled “Comparative Assessment of Two Mitigation Measures for Reducing Human-Elephant Conflict in Assam.”

The study evaluated the effectiveness of two strategies aimed at mitigating human-elephant conflict in the Soang Reserve Forest area of Nagaon district, Assam. The measures examined were the installation of low-voltage electric fencing and the cultivation of fodder crops preferred by elephants. The research sought to determine which of the two approaches is more effective in reducing conflict between humans and elephants. Prof. Choudhury was assisted in this research by Dr. J. B. Baishya and Dr. N. R. Talukdar.

The organizing body of the conference has long been engaged in research and advocacy on human-wildlife relationships, coexistence, and the impact of human activities on wildlife. Its primary objective is to identify solutions to challenges affecting sustainable and healthy coexistence between people and wildlife. The organization also works to promote a more humane approach to wildlife conservation and to strengthen professional capacity in the field.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Wildlife and Human Well-being.” Discussions focused on a wide range of subjects, including the close relationship between humans and nature, the influence of wildlife on art and culture, wildlife’s role in agriculture and food production, human-wildlife conflict and coexistence, social values associated with wildlife, and the interactions between people and animals.

More than 300 participants, delegates, and experts from different countries attended the conference and exchanged views on these important issues. It is learnt that Prof. Parthankar Choudhury’s research paper received considerable attention during the international deliberations aimed at promoting the sustainable conservation and long-term survival of wildlife.
