86,000 cases filed by govt involving imprisonment provisions below 3 years to be withdrawn: CM

Aug. 19: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the new judicial court building in Barpeta on Friday in the presence of Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Justice RM Chhaya, Justice of Gauhati High Court- Justice N Kotiswar Singh, Cabinet Minister Ranjit Kumar Dass among others.

Speaking during the occasion, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government will spend an amount of ₹300 crore in next three years for developing judicial infrastructure across districts and subdivisions in Assam.”

He also said, “During this Independence Day celebrations, I have already declared that within the next 15 days, a new litigation policy will be introduced in Assam. As such, we will seek the permission of the judiciary regarding withdrawal of all cases lodged by the state Government, which stipulates imprisonment below 3 years. This will result in vacating/ withdrawal of around 86,000 cases from the courts of Assam. This will definitely lessen the burden from the judiciary.

The Chief Minister said, “Honoured to be part of the inauguration ceremony of new court building at Barpeta. I am confident that the new court complex will be able to meet the hopes & aspirations of the people of Barpeta and aid in justice dispensation system in the district.” He further informed that 100 new posts in the judiciary will also be created which will help in disposing pending cases at a fast pace.
