Ex-students should not be allowed to stay in hostels: Ranoj Pegu

way2barak, Nov.28: A first semester student of Dibrugarh University jumped from the third floor of a hostel building to escape ragging. As per reports, the M.Com student Anand Sarma allegedly jumped from the hostel building after being fed up with ragging by his seniors for the past few days.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “It has come to notice that a Dibrugarh University student is hurt in an alleged case of ragging. Close watch maintained & followup action coordinated with district admn. Efforts on to nab the accused, victim being provided medical care. Appeal to students, say NO to Ragging.”

Meanwhile, the University has taken strict action against the 18 erring students and expelled them from the hostel with immediate effect for having been found to be involved in ragging under Clause 6 of the ‘Dibrugarh University Regulations for Prohibiting Ragging and Anti-Ragging Measures (as amended upto date) at Padmanath Gohain Baruah Chatra Nivas (PNGBCN), Dibrugarh University campus. “Considering the same they shall be cease to be students of Dibrugarh University with immediate effect,” stated the order.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has condemned the incident saying that such activities won’t be tolerated. On Monday, taking to Twitter, Pegu wrote, “I strongly condemn the ragging incident in Dibrugarh University where a student has been hurt grievously. Asking DU authority and police to take strong action. We will not tolerate such activities.”

“I am also asking university authorities to be vigilant and take prompt action whenever any attempt of ragging is reported. Ex-students should not be allowed to stay in hostels”, he added.
