Wild & Free organises free anti-rabies vaccination camp on World Zoonoses Day 2021

July 6: Wild and Free, a Silchar (Assam) based animal welfare NGO, organised a free Anti Rabies Vaccination drive for the dogs on Tuesday, July 6. The drive was successfully conducted in collaboration with the State Veterinary Hospital, Silchar, Assam, under the supervision of Dr. Sujoy Chakraborty (Veterinary In-charge, Sonai), Dr. Manoranjan Sarkar (Veterinary In-charge, Silchar) and Dr. Jiten Bhuiya (State Veterinary Officer). A total of 53 dogs were vaccinated by the volunteers of Wild and Free and the doctors.

World Zoonoses Day commemorates the work of French biologist Louis Pasteur. On 6 July 1885, Pasteur successfully administered the first vaccine against rabies, a zoonotic disease.

Zoonosis is an infectious disease that is transmitted from vertebrate animals to humans. It is caused by a pathogen, such as a bacterium, virus or parasite, that an animal carries and transmits to a human. The infected human then transmits the infectious agent to another human and then forms a chain, and can result in a pandemic.
