Jamiat Ulama prepares to legally challenge government’s decision to ‘shut-down’ madrasas in Assam

Dec. 17: The Assam State Cabinet has taken a decision on last Sunday that the State Madrassa Board & State Sanskrit Board shall stand dissolved from the declaration of the result of examination to be held in 2021-22. This will have its impact on 141 high madrasas, 542 madrasas and 97 Sanskrit tols in the state. The decision was resented by Assam State Jamiat Ulama. They have contemplated to legally challenge the Government’s decision to ‘shut down’ the madrassas. Meanwhile, the Assam Government has decided to table the bill in this connection in the winter session of the Assembly.

Elaborating the move, State Education Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the media at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati on Monday said that the State Madrassa Board and the State Sanskrit Board, which regulates the Madrassas & Sanskrit tols would get dissolved. He said, “Assam State Madrasa Board shall stand dissolved from the date of declaration of results of examination to be held in 2021-22.” Further, teachers who teach theological courses in the Madrassas, will be trained to teach general subjects in the schools.
