Commissioner-Secretary Kavitha Padmanabhan visits Silchar to review civic infrastructure and sanitation

Kavitha Padmanabhan, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Assam, Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, undertook a comprehensive visit to Silchar on Tuesday to review the status of urban infrastructure, civic amenities, and sanitation management in the town. The visit was aimed at assessing the on-ground conditions of key urban facilities and identifying areas for improvement to ensure sustainable and efficient urban development.

During her visit, the Commissioner & Secretary inspected several important locations within the jurisdiction of the Silchar Municipal Corporation. She visited busy markets, arterial roads, municipal dumping yards, and boundary areas of the Urban Local Body (ULB) to examine the prevailing situation with regard to cleanliness, solid waste management, and general civic maintenance.

Smt. Padmanabhan was accompanied by SMC , Commissioner ,Smt. Srishti Singh,  Executive Officer,SMC, Shri Nabuttam Sharma, AUAS ,officials from the Silchar Municipal Corporation, and representatives of the Shristi Waste Management team. The team interacted with field staff at various points and observed the operational challenges faced at the grassroots level.

Recognizing the critical issue of waterlogging that affects several parts of the town during the monsoon season, the Commissioner & Secretary also visited specific locations such as Rangirkhal, Longai Khal, and Sonai Road. These sites are particularly prone to flooding and drainage problems, and her visit there was intended to evaluate the situation first-hand and guide appropriate remedial measures.

Following the field inspections, a detailed review meeting was convened with municipal officials and representatives of relevant stakeholders. The meeting deliberated on identified service gaps, inefficiencies, and potential solutions to enhance solid waste management, drainage systems, and overall urban service delivery in Silchar. The discussions underscored the need for coordinated efforts, timely interventions, and accountability at all levels to achieve tangible results that directly benefit the citizens.

 

Speaking during the visit, Smt. Kavitha Padmanabhan reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to developing Assam’s urban centers into clean, liveable, and sustainable spaces. She emphasized the importance of robust planning, community participation, and diligent execution in creating a city environment that meets the aspirations of its residents.

Commissioner & Secretary Kavita Padmanabhan’s visit concluded on a note of optimism, with clear directions provided to the municipal authorities to address existing gaps and expedite improvement measures. The Department of Housing and Urban Affairs remains steadfast in its resolve to transform Silchar and other urban areas into exemplary models of civic management and sustainable urban living.
