Assam University hosts premiere of documentary film “Ophidian”
বিদ্যারম্ভ অনুষ্ঠানে নতুন তথ্যচিত্র ‘অফিডিয়ান’ প্রদর্শিত আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে

ওয়ে টু বরাক, ১৯ আগস্ট : আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বাস্তু ও পরিবেশ বিজ্ঞান বিভাগে গতকাল নবাগত শিক্ষার্থীদের বিদ্যারম্ভ অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজিত হয়। উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক রাজীব মোহন পন্থের উপস্থিতিতে আয়োজিত এই অনুষ্ঠানে প্রারম্ভিক বক্তব্য রাখেন পরিবেশ বিজ্ঞান অনুষদের ডিন অধ্যাপক পার্থঙ্কর চৌধুরী। এরপর স্বাগত বক্তব্য রাখতে গিয়ে বিভাগীয় প্রধান অধ্যাপক অপরাজিতা দে সবাইকে শুভেচ্ছা জানিয়ে সব শিক্ষক-শিক্ষাকর্মীর সঙ্গে নবাগতদের পরিচয় করিয়ে দেন।

অনুষ্ঠানে বিশেষ আকর্ষণ ছিল গণজ্ঞাপন বিভাগের গবেষক স্বপ্নদীপ সেনের নির্দেশিত স্বল্পদৈর্ঘ্য তথ্যচিত্র ‘অফিডিয়ান – এক সাপ উদ্ধারকারীর জীবন ও ঝুঁকি’-এর আনুষ্ঠানিক উদ্বোধন। উপাচার্যের হাত দিয়ে এই তথ্যচিত্র উদ্বোধনের পর তা প্রদর্শিত হয়। এই তথ্যচিত্রটি মূলত আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বন্যপ্রাণী গবেষক তথা সংরক্ষণকর্মী বিশাল সোনারের জীবন ও কর্মকাণ্ডের ওপর নির্মিত। যিনি ইতিমধ্যেই লোকালয় থেকে বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির শতাধিক সাপ উদ্ধার করে বন বিভাগের হাতে তুলে দিয়েছেন। এই তথ্যচিত্রে সাপ উদ্ধারকারীদের জীবনের ঝুঁকি, প্রচলিত ভ্রান্ত ধারণা ও প্রকৃতিতে এদের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা তুলে ধরা হয়েছে।

অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য রাখতে গিয়ে উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক রাজীব মোহন পন্থ শিক্ষার্থীদের জিজ্ঞাসা, দায়িত্ব এবং সমাজ ও পরিবেশের প্রতি সেবার মনোভাব পোষণ করে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার আহ্বান জানান। তিনি বলেন, তরুণ গবেষকদের ভূমিকা শুধু শিক্ষা ক্ষেত্রেই নয়, বরং জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন, জীববৈচিত্র্য হ্রাস ও মানুষ-প্রাণী সংঘাতের মতো বাস্তব সমস্যার সমাধানেও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। উপাচার্য এদিন সাপ নিয়ে সচেতনতামূলক তথ্যচিত্র নির্মাণের জন্য স্বপ্নদীপ ও বিশালকে আন্তরিক অভিনন্দন জানান।

এদিনের অনুষ্ঠানে আন্তর্জাতিক জীববৈচিত্র্য দিবস উপলক্ষে গত মে মাসে আয়োজিত ফটোগ্রাফি ও পোস্টার উপস্থাপন প্রতিযোগিতার বিজয়ীদের পুরস্কার বিতরণ করা হয়। ফটোগ্রাফি প্রতিযোগিতায় প্রথম ও দ্বিতীয় পুরস্কার লাভ করেন যথাক্রমে বিশাল সোনার ও মনিকা ছেত্রী। পোস্টারে পুরস্কার পান বাগ্মিতা নাগ ও দুর্বা কেমপ্রাই। প্রাসঙ্গিক বক্তব্য রাখেন অধ্যাপক জয়শ্রী রাউত, অধ্যাপক অজিত কুমার দাস, অধ্যাপক অরুণ জ্যোতি নাথ, সহযোগী অধ্যাপক ড. পান্না দেব, ড. শোভন দত্তগুপ্ত প্রমুখ। অনুষ্ঠানটি সঞ্চালনা করেন গবেষিকা অবন্তিকা প্রধান ও শেষে ধন্যবাদ সূচক বক্তব্য রাখেন দীপ্তিমালা সিংহ।

Way2barak, August 19 : Assam University organized an induction program for the newly admitted MSc students of the Department of Ecology & Environmental Science, marking the commencement of the new academic session. Also hosted the premiere of a short documentary titled “Ophidian – The Life and Perils of a Snake Rescuer”. The program commenced with an inaugural address by Prof. Parthankar Choudhury, Dean of the E.P. Odum School of Environmental Sciences, followed by a warm and gracious welcome speech delivered by Prof. Aparajita De, Head of the Department.

The special highlight of the day was the premiere of the short documentary film “OPHIDIAN – The Life and Peril of a Snake Rescuer”, directed by Swapnadeep Sen, research scholar, Assam University. The film is based on the life and work of Bishal Sonar, Wildlife Researcher and Conservationist from Assam University, who has rescued hundreds of snakes while raising awareness on their ecological importance and the urgent need for coexistence. Through striking visuals and heartfelt narration, the documentary sheds light on the dangers faced by snake rescuers, the myths surrounding snakes, and their vital role in maintaining ecological balance.

In his speech, Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant encouraged students to “carry forward the spirit of inquiry, responsibility, and service towards society and the environment.” He emphasized that the role of young scholars is not limited to academics, but also extends to solving real-world challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and human-wildlife conflict. In his concluding remarks, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pant congratulated both Bishal and Swapnadeep for their contributions.

The occasion was further enriched by the insightful and encouraging words of Prof. Jayashree Raut, Prof. Ajit Kumar Das, Prof. Arun Jyoti Nath & Dr. Panna Deb, who motivated the students to pursue academic excellence and holistic development. Concluding the session, Dr. Shovan Dutta Gupta provided a concise overview of the department’s technical initiatives.

In addition, a prize distribution ceremony was held to recognize the winners of the photography and poster presentation competitions conducted as part of the International Day for Biological Diversity celebrations on 22nd May. The first and second prizes in the photography competition were awarded to Bishal Sonar and Monica Chettri respectively, while the poster presentation awards were conferred upon Bagmita Neog and Durba Kemprai for their outstanding contributions. The program was hosted by Abantika Pradhan and concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dipti Mala Sinha.
