The prevalence of tobacco use among  the teenagers has though decreased as per recent data, yet those consuming it are vulnerable to multifarious fatal diseases. Keeping this aspect in mind, an Anti-tobacco campaign was launched by the members of Inner wheel Club, Silchar.

The anti-tobacco drive was carried on in major points of Silchar town. Various slogans related to the evil effects of tobacco on human health were printed and pasted on the rear side of auto-rickshaws. Speaking to way2barak, Jhumki Saha, President of  Inner Wheel Club, Silchar said, “The second major cause of death globally is the use of tobacco and is currently responsible for killing one in 10 adults worldwide. The annual campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form.”

Mrs. Saha further said, “I appeal one and all to use their contacts whatever they have to work in the direction of eradication of the menace of tobacco use from the society and I am confident that together we can achieve this goal.” She also said that on the occasion of World Environment Day, they will take up plantation programme at some selective spots in the town.

Apart from the Club President, also present during this awareness drive were Sampa Banik, Sutapa Bhattacharjee, Minu Gope, Moumita Gupta among others.

The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2019 is on “tobacco and lung health.” The campaign will increase awareness on: the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health, from cancer to chronic respiratory disease and the fundamental role lungs play for the health and well-being of all people. The campaign also serves as a call to action, advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption and engaging stakeholders across multiple sectors in the fight for tobacco control.
