Flood situation in Assam very grim, around 2 lakh people affected in 7 districts

May 26: On one hand, when the number of COVID-19 positive cases are alarmingly increasing in Assam, on the other, flood situation in the state has become very grim with a havoc in 7 villages causing loss to a population of 1,94,916. Incessant rains in the state have inundated major areas in the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Darrang, Nalbari, Goalpara, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia in Assam.

A total of 229 villages of 17 revenue circles were affected in the 7 flood affected districts of Assam. The Assam Cabinet has resolved to provide relief to flood victims as per the Relief Manual of the Government and the Deputy Commissioners have been asked for ensuring stock of adequate relief materials and the repair of embankments. A total of 8,971 people are taking shelter in 35 relief camps set up by the administrations of the affected districts.

Meanwhile, a red  weather alert has been issued for Assam and Meghalaya till 28 May, by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), while the Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a severe flood warning alert.
