West Silchar including Kathal Road & parts of Vivekananda Road submerged, level rising
May 23: Since 7 AM on Monday, many places in West Silchar, such as, Kathal Road, parts of Vivekananda Road, Chencoorie were submerged. Flood water entered inside the houses of many people inside the lanes near Maharshi Vidya Mandir at Kathal Road.
Speaking with way2barak, cultural activist Jashabanta Das said, “The water level in this part of Silchar has increased a lot today morning. We just cannot understand from where this water has come now! All our houses are flooded now, yet none have come to enquire about us. Not only Kathal Road, the entire West Silchar, Chencoorie Road, Bhakatpur, parts of Vivekananda Road is full with water.”
Another resident of Kathal Road while speaking with way2barak said, “Water has mainly entered our area from 7 AM today. The level of water here is rising gradually. We don’t know what will happen towards the evening.”
Meanwhile, as per report received from Assam Water Resource Department, river Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar at 4 PM on Monday, was flowing much below the danger level and was recorded at 19.61 metres. The danger level at this point is 19.83 metre. The water level is decreasing at 1 cm per hour at this hour. The water level came below danger level at 7 AM today.
Inspite of the fact that water level of River Barak was receding, but West Silchar areas seem to exhibit a different scenario. Gradually since Monday morning, flood water is entering inside the houses of the people. The low-lying area just beside the main Kathal Road is full with water and appears like a river in flood.
