Amrit Brikshya Andolan gains momentum in Cachar, Minister Patowary reviews progress

Way2barak, August 12 aa: In a significant push to advance Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s flagship Amrit Brikshya Andolan, Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary presided over a review meeting at the Cachar District Commissioner’s conference hall here on Monday.
During the meeting, Minister Patowary commended the remarkable progress achieved under the initiative, extending special recognition to the Cachar Forest Range Officer for his unwavering commitment. The minister lauded the efforts of DPM (SHG) Biplab Nath, who reported that 64.25% of the target for photo uploads by Self Help Groups (SHGs) had been successfully met, reflecting strong community engagement.
The Agriculture Department also made significant strides, with the successful distribution of 10,000 saplings to Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) on Monday. Minister Patowary underscored the importance of achieving self-sufficiency in vegetable cultivation and mustard seed production within the district, urging the District Agriculture Officer to prioritize these areas.
In his directives, Minister Patowary emphasized the promotion of high-value crops such as mahogany and white sandalwood, urging collaboration between the Agriculture and Forest Departments to support farmers in these endeavors. He highlighted that enhancing the tree economy could play a vital role in strengthening the economic standing of farmers, thereby contributing to the district’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Further, Minister Patowary stressed the need to improve infrastructure and manpower in the district’s tea gardens, directing the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) to prioritize these upgrades.
The review also featured presentations from District Forest Officers of Karimganj and Silchar, showcasing updates on ongoing plantation efforts, while the Agriculture Department shared insights into related agricultural initiatives under the scheme.
Concluding the meeting, Minister Patowary set a firm deadline of August 12, 2024, for all departments to complete their respective targets, ensuring the success of the Amrit Brikshya Andolan.
This pivotal review meeting underscores the district’s commitment to environmental sustainability and economic growth, aligning with the broader objectives of the Amrit Brikshya Andolan. The Assam state government has launched this transformative program to expand the state’s green cover through an extensive tree plantation drive. Running from August 1 to August 15, 2024, the initiative aims to plant 3 crore saplings across the state, inviting wide-ranging participation.
The meeting was also attended by Lakhipur MLA Koushik Rai, Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, Katigorah MLA Khalil Uddin Majumder, District Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha, Superintendent of Police Cachar, Numal Mahato, and other departmental heads of Cachar district.
